On the advice of a guide book, my wife and I visited Casa La Abuela for lunch in early May 2011. We had a most enjoyable Menu del Dia for €15, and a beer each. We each had some lovely amuse bouches, featuring some preserved orange. To start with I had berenjena gratinada con parmesano- gratinated grilled aubergine. Divine. My wife had espaguetti con queso fresco, tomate y albahaca- spaghetti with local cheese. She loved it. To follow, I had conejo frito con ajos secos- fried rabbit with roasted garlic- again, lovely, but the rabbit could have been meatier. The roasted garlic was gorgeous, sweet, not remotely garlicky. My wife thoroughly enjoyed her estofado de ternera con verduras- lamb stew with vegetables, which melted in the mouth.
For dessert we both had creme caramel.
Casa La Abuela is a very traditional restaurant, with good service and excellent local food. The cuisine has an authentic Moorish feel. You need more than a smattering of Spanish to make sense of the menu. We recommend this restaurant, and we recommend Xativa, and particularly its castle and historic churches, as a rewarding day trip from Javea/ Denia.

El nombre completo es Taverna Setavense Carpanel, situado en el casco antiguo de Xativa. Es una casa del siglo XIX con terraza intinteriorconteterrazaiinteriorinteriorencuentrparte de muralla
Being some 40 kilometres inland the ancient town of Xativa is to a large extent off the beaten track for holiday or even expat community Brits seeking the pleasure of the Valencian coast. It is however well worth a visit for those enjoying the cultural heritage of Spain especially the magnificent fortress castle which overlooks the town providing a 360degree Panorama of the countryside. Our friends who's parents previously lived in Xativa for some 30years had booked a late lunch for 6 at the Taverna Setaberse Carpanel located on the Career Sant Frances 33 with modern interior decor and lovely shaded al fresco area also with views of the chefs at work in the kitchen - always a plus point in my view. Also no piped music so conversation is discreet and not intrusive to other guests. Young Spanish children at other tables were beautifully dressed and very well behaved with not a smart phone or tablet in sight.
We chose to eat a la carte starting with a mix of hot & cold tapas including steamed mussel's, aubergines & red peppers on toasted bread, fried eggs with Iberico ham plus tomato's in Olive oil. Our main courses consisted of 2 x grilled Cod, 1 x Grilled Salmon, 2 x Duck with Apple and 1 x Tuna steak. All agreed the taste, texture, quality and quantity were very good. Of particular note were both the Duck and Tuna being beautifully seared leaving the inner meat a delicate rare pink which simply melted in the mouth - all accompanied with very reasonable priced bottles of Spanish Somontano region chardonnay followed by home made cheesecake and coffee. The total bill was circa 35€ per head not cheap but as compared to an equivalent London restaurant setting very good value.

Restaurante situado en la zona histórica de la ciudad, cocina mediterránea e italiana. Disponemos de Menu del Dia de Lunes a Viernes(13 euros) y Sabado y Domingo( 17 euros). Precio medio a la carta 23 euros.
We had an excellent meal with wine at this restaurant. Its in a slightly obscure spot but worth finding. I had solomillo followed by a delicious tarte de tres chocolates and my wife had lubina (sea bass) then profiteroles - which could have been crunchier!...MoreThank you very much

Tiny restaurant in narrow old town street. Owner is fanatical and very knowledgeable about Jamon 'pata negra' which is the best of the best. He knows everything about high quality wines and cheeses and is a larger than life character with tatoos and pirecings and a booming voice. But don't let that put you off he is cheerful and very friendly and will enjoy telling you exactly where everything comes from and why it is the best and how it is prepared and cooked and how you should eat it. He is a real carnivore and his steaks and home made burgers are amazing but it is probably a place for vegetarians to avoid.

Quite a small restaurant in the square with aircon which made the dining experience more pleasurable in this huge July heat. Concentrating mostly on Fish Tapas or mains, had run out of Rabo de Toro which disappointed, but the service is excellent and my partners Bacalou was the best she had ever had. House wine was excellent at €3 per glass, and the pudding was superb. Would recommend, but book a table as its busy

Hi! This bar is a bit far from the city centre but it is the best place for tapas. We go regularly at the weekends because we have a pint and tapa for 1,80€. It's always full of locals since 8:00 p.m. Good meeting point with friends!

Arrived early with my two friends we could choose where we wanted to sit. Staff very welcoming . We had the menu del dia which was 3 course and a drink for €12.50. Our starters were 2 spaghetti carbonara and courgette soup, followed by our mains of 2 tuna steaks with potatoes and veg and the other was chicken in breadcrumbs with veg. The tuna steaks cooked to perfection, the chicken was very tasty. Desserts we all ordered different and put them in the centre of the table and shared almond cheesecake, cinnamon ice cream and chocolate mousse. Food good, staff attentive, surroundings clean and bright. By 2.30 the place was packed so get there early.

We were keen to come back to this new stylish restaurant again and try their set €16 lunch menu. The choices were completely different from last time.Ist was a beautifully dressed avocado, rocket and smoked sardine salad served with unusual but delicious hot cakey bread ideal for soaking up the rich olive oil dressing. This was followed by small toasts with a ratatouille topping full of flavour but not too filling.Next up was described, in Spanish, as a low temperature cooked egg with carrot. It was better than it sounded.A smooth sweet carrot soup with a perfectly cooked poached?egg floating in it garnished with caramelised onions and chives It looked and tasted lovely. The very friendly waiter brought us some more of the delicious bread/cake to mop up.Finally we had the patatas Vera these were small potato balls dusted with smokey Vera pimenta.Whilst the 4 dishes were based on inexpensive ingredients they were all tasty and tastefully presented. For our mains we shared the fideua(noodles)with clams, octopus and fish.Often on menu del dia restaurants use frozen tasteless seafood for the fideua but this was a wonderful fresh fishy dish. The other main was a slow cooked beef cheek shredded, then pressed into a mould and roasted surrounded with a bechamel sauce and padron peppers.Moist and melted in the mouth.A traditional dish with a modern presentation.Desserts were a trio of fresh melon,a pannacotta with strawberry puree and chocolate cake with cream.Excellent food produced by a very talented young chef who you could see hard at work in the open kitchen. It was like having your own chef. The restaurants second floor was full and with all young women.I was the only man there. The food is light imaginative and beautifully presented in a spotlessly clean and stylish restaurant so you can see why it appeals. The menu does include a drink but we had a bottle of the excellent Mendoza chardonnay at 16€ as well so the bill came to 52€.Still great value. This restaurant deserves to do well.We will bring friends next time to spread the word.

Pizzas were delicious and cooked perfectly with tons of tasty toppings to chose from. Never had any of the pasta dishes but they looked good also and the staff were friendly and prompt. Prices were very good, especially given the size of the pizzas and the generosity of the toppings. Would go there again to satisfy our pizza cravings!
