Small road side eatery in Tissa serving the best local food we tasted in Sri Lanka and at a very reasonable price. Highly recommended
The food and service was amazing! Had fresh whole fish and jumbo prawns with a beautiful tropical salad. Some of the best seafood I had in 6 weeks of travel around Sri Lanka.

These Road side stalls sell Unique buffalo milk curd served with treacle or honey. This is probiotic. It is so delicious that I would like to introduce it to all fellow tourists travelling to Sri Lanka. The curd is prepared in earthern pots . I have some lovely pictures of these that I can post.
The southern Sri Lankan buffalo curd is famous all over the island. One can see fields of buffalo grazing peacefully and their milk is made into this wonderful 'sour' curd that is sold in clay pots on roadside stalls. Traditionally it is served with sweet treacle. It is most definitely worth trying and is not expensive if bought at the roadside.

This truly is a canteen. Myself and my husband visited for dinner as we were staying in the local area.
They didn't have most of the dishes on the menu available, just rice and noodles, it came within five minutes and we left within fifteen, it was greasy and generally terrible. The noodles were of Super Noodle quality and the only thing we actually ate or drank was the locally produced water.
The manager also tried to set my husband up with a local girl when he went outside for a cigarette, despite him mentioning he was already married at least three times. AVOID!

Every day at Saraii we celebrate local food, local farming and local culture by serving organic meals inspired by these connections. Each meal is prepared by local artisans who enjoy making the food more interesting and the meals more memorable. Don't expect a regular menu at Saraii but expect surprises. We cook authentic Sri Lankan meals from a seasonal menu which is decided by what's growing in our garden, what's selling at the local market and what we can find for you locally. Breakfast, lunch and dinner can be an abundant spread of local fruit, traditional Sri Lankan curries and salads, lots of bread and rice and even a Western spread for those who don't favour our spicy cuisine. We have a Special Gala Dinner from 24th December to 3rd January which will be only 35$ per person!
Much like a fat girl on the internet the images and information available are an unfair representation of this restaurant. So that you'll not be greatly disappointed, like i was, please just avoid.
The staff were untrained. They cleared starter plates before all the diners had finished. Followed sharply by the mains, again one diner was still on their soup starter.
Which brings me to the dishes. From the photos available you'd be wrong not to think that this is a high end restaurant, you might even dress smart to visit. Don't. The food and venue are substandard and terribly bland.
The chicken noodle soup starter was pretty much ramen noodles from a packet with extra water to create the soup, and chicken thrown in for good measure.
The chicken strips with cream starter was simply put: chicken cut into strips and served in a cream sauce. No accompaniments. Just chicken in sauce on a plate. Again awfully bland.
The mains: mushroom biryani and devilled mushroom Sandwich were both complete let downs. Again the mushroom biryani came with a yogurt dressing on the side and nothing else. No papadoms. No rotti. For 900 rupees you'd expect something more than rice; mushrooms; and yogurt. The devilled mushroom Sandwich was 4 triangled sandwiches, slightly toasted, each with around 2-3 mushrooms cut up and some onion. Again for 650 rupees you'd think you'd get more mushroom filling than that, but I guess there wasn't "mush-room".
We ordered water and we're giving room temperature water. Yum.
All and all paying 3,278.22 rupees for that lunch was ridiculous. The worst part was that we had been looking forward to visiting here as everything online looked so promising. But just like meeting that fat girl in person it was a HUGE disappointment.
Two thumbs down

Clean and nice looking place. However, the offering Friday at 18. hours was chicken soup, fried rice and only one fruit juce?

Nasty staff who did not want to cook certain food on the menu as it was a big job for them! I have never heard anything like this. They do not cater for vegetarians and most of the menu items are in-fact not real. We walked out as half of the items they did not want to serve us.
Would not recommend as staff were extremely rude and not accommodating.
Also to add, the staff are somewhat racist to Indians (which came as a complete shock to us).

We ordered deviled chicken with vegetable fried rice and it was really good! The experience was even better because of the good service of the owner, always with a smile and happy to receive us. He also let us bring our own drinks and helped us catch a ride back our hostel.
