Where to Eat in Santiago de Compostela: The Best Restaurants and Bars

January 18, 2018 Dorsey Hagwood

If you see nothing else in this World Heritage city, you simply must visit the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, an awe-inspiring confection of baroque architecture. Once you’ve regained composure, head out on a bicycle to see the rest of this glorious city. Foodies and boozehounds will delight in a guided gastronomy tour, while modernists will enjoy the Galician Center of Contemporary Art.

We found this hidden restaurant in the back streets of Santiago. If you are looking for the ultimate restaurant experience and you like surprises, ask the chef to choose for you and you won’t regret it!!! They don’t have WiFi, which we thought was excellent. The chairs are a bit uncomfortable if you’re in for a long dinner. The tables are shared so you easily start a conversation with your neighbours. The only thing I regret is to not repeat the plate of domburi de xarda ;-)

What a memorable meal! Just outstanding. We had the tasting menu and loved every single item. Beautiful presentations and delightful tastes. Price was quite reasonable given all the courses and amount of food. Lovely setting just outside of the city center. Wish we could go back again.

After retracting my initial review, written in the early hours of a morning after 5 weeks travelling, I placed this excellent restaurant in Portugal and raved about it. I managed to delete and rewrite, this time placing it geographically in Spain. Wherever the restaurant is however, it's brilliant and we had two of the most memorable meals of our trip. The langoustines were delicious as entrees and the the steak and chicken as mains equally gorgeous. All of the wait staff were friendly and helpful especially with wine selection. On our first night it was quite warm so we sat in the little courtyard but on the second night we were upstairs. Neither meals disappointed and the offer of Pedro Ximenez to finish the meal means now that we'll have to find a supplier when we return to Australia. A small price to pay for such a memorable meal, lovely wait staff in an historic and beautiful old town.

Last year we had a great dinner at Abastos, so after a crazy day with a cancelled flight we thought of treating us with a nice dinner. Unfortunately we were shown differently. We are not seafood/fish experts but like to experience new tastes with some involvement in the selection of our food. This did not happen at all.
After getting to our seats the waiter just asked for allergies and than without ordering small plates of different kind of mussels (for us everything with a shelve is a mussel ...) were placed in front of us. No explanation/translation of the menu or asking what and how much we want. As without any information different plates were placed on our table, we started to feel a little lost. Asking the waiter also didn't help much as he was just rushing through. Looking around gave us the impression that in general the throughput time was quite high however the ability of speaking Spanish helps to get some more attention.
So after 45min we were again outside and were astonished how service impacts a complete restaurant experience. A pity as the quality is really good.

Absolutely amazing!! We had the tasting menu - which was unbelievable value! - and incredibly good, plus THEIR BREAD!! We normally don't eat bread, but i read it in a review and decided to try it here...best bread i ever had - you have to try it. From the tasting menue we specially loved the steak tartar, the canelloni and the desert. Produce, execution, flavours and presentation perfect. Very friendly service, with good wine recommendation.

While shopping downtown, we came across this fine restaurant with delicious food and excellent service. It is best for couples -- rice and pasta dishes for two persons. We arrived early enough to get a table without a reservation, but we had the impression that Reservations are usually necessary. We had the crab paella (arroz de necoras) that was outstanding.

Only 9 reviews? Maybe because it's not in the old city and/or not on any tourist walks? But maybe it has great reviews by local residents in Spanish. We were recommended by Spanish friends in A Coruna.
We got there at 9 and the place was empty (Spaniards do eat late). But we got focused and good service and the menu choice wasn't bad. There were some standard Galician dishes - croquetas, empanadas, pulpo and the normal array of simple fish dishes. Our teenagers enjoyed the croquetas de jamon and my wife and I loved the ensalada de gambones. The mero (grouper) was a bit too 'al dente' (uncooked) for my wife and daughter's taste and was sent back for a quick further cooking boost. I made a poor choice (my fault) in ordering the pig's trotters - I saw the pork bit but neglected to register that 'manitos' means hands! So I'm afraid I didn't really enjoy mine at all - not to be fair the restaurants fault. My son's solomillo was also a bit bloody for a medium but he still enjoyed it.
With a bottle of excellent ribeiro the bill came to 187 euros for four - so, not cheap.
I don't think we're likely to return if we do go back to Santiago - maybe it's better for a lunch - but by all means give it a try.

Entre Pedras is an inexpensive, cozy spot to get dinner. The cafe opens at 7:00 and the kitchen at 8:30, but it's worth the wait. It's surprisingly cheap for healthy, fresh food. The veggie burgers are huge and delicious. The salad was also a surprisingly large portion, but needed seasoning. I only wish they were open for lunch!

Almost like a private club but really amiable. They make you feel at home and offer superb suggestions of truly great seafood dishes (I didn't try the great looking meats). Intimate, modern, imaculate and absolutely wonderful cuisine... Oysters amazing, scallops OMG, and Rape Negro (best monkfish I've ever tasted without doubt). Cannot wait to return.
