Biscay (Basque: Bizkaia; Spanish: Vizcaya) is a province of Spain located just south of the Bay of Biscay. The name also refers to a historical territory of the Basque Country, heir of the ancient Lordship of Biscay. Its capital city is Bilbao. It is one of the most prosperous and important provinces of Spain as a result of the massive industrialization in the last years of the 19th century and first half of the 20th century. Since the deep deindustrialization of the 1970s, the economy has come to rely more on the services sector.

We tried the gastronomic menu. We were offered to enjoy the beautiful Terrace with views over the valley. Though the restaurant lacked of wine pairing, the head waiter offered us very interesting wines, like a txakoli vermouth and a late harvest txakoli. The menu consisted of different elaborations with mushrooms, vegetables, fish and meat, all of them very tasty, finely cooked and served. The price is quite reasonable for a restaurant of this level.

We made an online reservation at Arandia and were called several hours later to confirm. Our Tuesday reservation was particularly helpful because on Tuesday the restaurant serves the traditional black bean meal. We ordered 2 bean meals and when we arrived selected our other dishes a la carte. Our server who spoke excellent English explained and described our choices. This restaurant has been open at the same location for about 70 years. The current owner and chef has run the restaurant for about 2 years. We started the meal with foie gras. It was good, for me not great. It was not the actual duck liver but the pate. The black bean was presented next along with its supporting delicacies. The beans were in a huge pot and superb, along with cabbage, excellent blood sausage, sausage, and hams. OMG, this meal for 2 was enough for 4! As we had already ordered both the hake it arrived with the beans. A superb dish. Then, just when we hoped that our order of calamari had been forgotten, a serving platter of amazing grilled calamari arrived. It was about the best we had in the Basque Country. Dessert followed, an apple dish with meringue. It was light , delicious and not too sweet. Along with the excellent bottle of Chaloli wine, we rolled out the door. The food was amazing, the price totally reasonable. I'd highly recommend this restaurant, especially on a Tuesday for the bean meal.

I had visited this restaurant a few years ago and happened to be in the area so I took the chance to see if they had improved further. And they had! I chose fresh asparagus for starters which were beautfully decorated and then for the main course a filet steak. The waiter kindly offered a half portion so that I could have a dessert as well. This takes the review to a definite five star. The dessert was a mango pavlova with all the bubbly effects intact on the plate.
The interior is also something to be impressed by: a huge dining area with an ambience of brasserie in the middle of the country side. Speciality is obviously parilla so this permeates the place. Huge green areas surround the place with an equally large Terrace. You can linger on here and have coffee and if you need to drive spend the time relaxing and let the dinner settle first.

Basque traditional cuisine with fish and seafood
Great area. We had the best fish, a dish we have been looking forward to ever since we arrived to the Basque Country. We tried the food in different cities in Basque and we were very disappointed, so we were happy to find this place and finally have a great meal. Highly recommended

Azurmendi is a restaurant where emotions multiply. Each corner, detail and service reflects the personality and philosophy of Eneko Atxa. 2017 Elite Traveller best restaurant in the world Azurmendi restaurant is the best example of signature cuisine in Biscay and the only restaurant in the province with 3 Michelin stars. It was built into a hillside surrounded by autochthonous vineyards. Eneko´s home, as he calls the restaurant, was conceived and built with sustainability, the foundation of his philosophy, in mind. Azurmendi is possibly one of the most unique sustainable buildings of modern architecture. It reflects the canons of the Basque identity and integrates photovoltaic solar panels and a geothermic system to produce electricity, harvests rainwater to cover a number of operations among other features. For all these, Azurmendi*** was granted the Sustainable Restaurant Award 2014.
We celebrated our wedding anniversary having lunch in this excellent restaurant, a fantastic experience right through from the welcome drink and amuse bouche served in a picnic basket in their lobby, the tour and next dish served in the kitchen saying hello to all the chefs, I think they were 14 or more, the next couple of amuse bouche, pinchos or canapés were served in the mini green house and then we were shown in to the restaurant were we savoured a fantastic tasting menu and the Sommelier chose some excellent wines to go with the food. The service was tip top right through our dining experience and the staffed seemed happy to be working there which is a good sign of a good leader, the owner and chef who went around at the end of the meal and spoke to each table. One outstanding service detail was that our head waiter after having served a few dishes noticed that my husband was left handed and changed the glasses around for it to be easier for him to pick up the glass. His green house on top of the restaurant was another surprising feature, very well thought through the whole restaurant concept. Highly recommend!

This restaurant will not dissapoint you. In my opinion it maybe one of the best -if not the best- restaurants in the Basque Country among those without without a Michelin star (and definitely better than others which do have a star). The building is an incredibly well kept, very old traditional Basque farm (a so called "baserri") in a mountain overlooking the coast.
The food is simply superb, local Basque food at its best, without needless sophistication, but with the freshest, best-tasting ingredients.
Definitely one of my favourites.

Once you find this restaurant in the hills outside Bilbao you are in for a surprise. Tables are long Seating 16 people on bench seats, so customers eat alongside each other. The welcome and hospitality is superb and the food is excellent - some typical spanish dishes and some super local Basque food and excellent Deserts. Superb quality and value. The owner's daughter and her team were highly attentive and friendly. This was an unexpected and most enjoyable experieice

Very beautiful place with a very interesting meal changing very often as they use season products.
They are very warm people and fares are very OK, I mean, you can eat a lot and everything is so good that nothing seems to be expensive.
I recomend it without any doubt.

Got stuck in traffic in Bilbao and ended up driving through and found this little gem. Had the most wonderful Rioja with delicious starters then on waiters recommendation shared a huge rib of beef. It was seared in kitchen then finished by Ourselves at the table on a hot stone. Perfect finish to our break to Rioja

An incredible feast bringing together to subtlety of Japanese culture with the boldness of Iberian culinary thunder, Kuma is a must-visit for anyone who loves the sushi experience. Highlights are too many to mention but include the king crab tempura, the cabineiro, the black truffle thingy, the nigiri's of horsemackeral (smokey) , squid bocata, sea bream, scorched tuna belly - all is given a local twist be it the addition of sultry olive oil , or smoked olive oil, or tomato pure. Toro in a jalapeño sauce brought tears to my eyes. The service is amazing experienced and relaxed. You're in capable hands. If the chefs starts a cult I'm joining. Well...don't just stand there ....go! It's expensive but not by NY or London standards. And it's really worth it if youre a sushi-loving foodie.
