As per usual David and the team provided superb service and fantastic food making our evening wonderful. Oysters, beautiful Lamb Shanks and Fillet steak, with desserts to top it off. We will certainly be back on our next visit to Palmerston North.

We had a very relaxed evening with friends recently. The place was crowded, and it seemed most people were celebrating an important milestone. We had three courses, everyone at the table had something different, and everyone was happy with their food and wine.

Our first impression was rather negative - frying fat smells in the inside kitchen/dining area giving a rather 'fuggy' impression since the windows were closed, and the cafe itself both indoors and outdoors is quite small.
However, the food itself was really delicious - I had poached egg and bacon with hollandaise sauce, and a most wonderful crunchy-coated mashed kumara ball - wonderful!
I would definitely go again.

The authenticity of the decor, the extremely friendly staff and the outstanding food make this restaurant a place to share, as Barbara says after you’ve been seated, a place to share company, drink and food in a calm and welcoming environment. The waitress was thoroughly delightful.

The food took a little while to come out and when it did, it was pretty uninspiring. The toast tasted like it had been ready for about 15mins and was chewy under the smashed avo. Coffee was strong and enjoyable though and service was friendly.

We visited on the basis of a menu viewed online that was quite extensive and included both fine dining mains and casual mains However the menu we were given on arrival was very limited and completely different. When queried we were advised that casual mains were not available. We chose the rye loaf which came with three types of butter. This was a tasty starter and kept us going for the next 30 minutes till our steak mains arrived. The medium steak was cooked as ordered but the well done was not as cooked as expected. A very small accompaniment of leek, a couple of small carrots and a dab of potato did little to enhance the meal size. The service was OK but not exceptional. The initial drinks were slow to arrive almost 10 minutes after being ordered and a second order needed a trip to the bar as a reminder after a similar amount of time had elapsed. The staff seemed to be quite random in their movements and who they were serving. Having four different waiters come to our table was confusing and it seemed like anyone could serve any table. I doubt we will hurry back here.

Nice cafe, very friendly staff..coffee was good, breakfast yummy! Cafe has a bit of a French influence and some areas seemed a little dated but overall a good stop :)

Everything we ordered was really good. The garlic bread was scrumptious and the Thai salad packed full of fresh flavours. Only comment is on the chocolate dessert that stated that if you didn’t like chocolate order it any way- we’ll don’t because you’d hate it as it’s overwelmingly chocolate and even for a chocoholic it was over the top and very rich.

Just around the corner from the square area is a cafe with style
Thank heavens for Cafe Jacko. Great food, service, and coffee - consistently!
I was beginning to think soy cappuccinos were meant to taste bad, but Jacko proves that they can be done well, and consistently well. I've never had a bad coffee here - nor have my friends, who get cow's milk coffees. And where salads seem like kind of an afterthought at a lot of other cafes, Cafe Jacko salads are interesting and delicious, with a good selection.
They have the one of the best eggs bennys in town, and I've tried them all. If you don't want bacon or salmon, they'll make sure you have a couple of delicious veg extras, like spinach and creamy mushrooms. They have a lot of classic kiwi food here, but done all classy-like, including marmite scones, raw fish salad, and mince on toast. Would be a great place to bring visitors from overseas.
The staff are always friendly and helpful, and i've seen them eat lunch here too, so it must be a great place to work if they're happy to eat here, together, during their time off.
Bonus feature: there is a guy who comes in and plays live sax, which is quite mellow and nice.
I love Cafe Jacko!

Learning how to prepare an authentic dish adds another element to later dining experiences. This weekend we were lucky enough to have a private cooking class, a brilliant gift from work colleagues.
The session started with a look through the recipe and a discussion of the ingredients. We watched a real chef prepare the dish (in this case chicken with basil) then tasted the results.
Our turn followed - the ingredients were set out for us and we were in charge of the woks. The big lessons were control of the heat, speed around the wok and timing - how you treat the ingredients and when does change the final flavours.
All in all, this was a thoroughly enjoyable and educational session. We would love to do it again with another dish and certainly recommend it highly. Try it!!!
