Where to Eat in Noumea: The Best Restaurants and Bars

December 1, 2017 Florencio Paulino

Noumea, on the island of Grand Terre, is the capital of the French territory of New Caledonia. The peaceful port city has a diverse population and colorful European architecture, reflecting its colonial history. Having served as the headquarters of the US Army during WWII, the tropical shrubbery of Ouen Toro Mount is now under the protection of abandoned Naval guns. The Michel Corbasson Zoological and Forest Park offers visitors shaded walks amongst rare birds and views out over the lagoon.

It is quite a distance from Anse Varta (allow a good hour by bus) but we took a bus to the central station and then...MoreHello, Thank you for having taken time to make us a comment. I am very satisfied if we were able to contribute to the success of your holidays around a good meal. Have a good day, see you soon... Fabrice

No English menu and no real attempt to assist in translating. Advised no prawns but table next to us were eating prawns and we were advised that this part of the degustation. We weren't offered this nor was it on the menu I google translated. The snails and wine were great everything else was average including the service. We tried numerous restaurants in Noumea on holiday and this was the worse one.

Highly recommended! Wow! What a find! We ate here three times in two weeks and ate better food here than in some of the best restaurants in France. On our first visit, we started with the Ravioles de Royan, which consisted of tiny little ravioli parcels stuffed with comté cheese served with a bacon cream sauce and Serrano ham. The ravioli were so small and delicious that we thought that the chef must be Italian. However, we were assured that he was a Frenchman! Bravo!! This was accompanied by a 2015 M. Chapoutier Tavel Beaurevoir Rose from the Rhone Valley. For our mains, we had the most exquisite beef cheek with champignons wrapped in pastry with a delicious jus served with a coleslaw and a pea mousse. This was accompanied by a 2015 Marsannay Les Longeroies Village Vignes by Regis Bouvier. On our second visit, we enjoyed the gazpacho, which has got to be one of the finest taste sensations I have ever experienced! It was truly Michelin star quality! For our mains, we had the red snapper with lentils and sautéed vegetables and the lamb shoulder, served with amazing mashed potato, which were both equally enjoyable. On the second visit, we enjoyed the Perand-Vergelesses Premier Cru by Pierre Marey et Fils 2014 with our starters and for our mains, we enjoyed the Volnay Premier Cru Clos des Chênes 2011 by Reyane & Pascal Bouley. The Marsannay was served in the most unusual red wine glasses that were brilliantly designed to allow the full bouquet of the wine to be enjoyed, with the top angled in such a way that you could really experience it. On our third visit, we both could not go past the gazpacho, which we cannot rave more highly about! The sheer concentration of flavour achieved in this dish is remarkable. For our mains, we both had a brand new dish for the restaurant which consisted of tuna, of exceptional quality, lightly seared and served with a curry, honeyed, satay sauce with peanuts, sitting on a bed of Napa cabbage. The dish had tiny red pickled onions that gave just the right degree of acidity to counterbalance the honey. There was a separate bowl of coconut rice with almonds that was delicious! We selected the perfect accompaniment of a 2013 Benjamin Laroche Chablis Premier Cru Forests la Manufacture. The service in this restaurant was outstanding on each occasion, the staff being very ably led by Jordane, the Service Manager. After having three incredible, faultless meals, we went into the kitchen to congratulate the chefs. We cannot wait to visit the restaurant again on our next visit to Noumea. We suggest that you book early to ensure that you can eat here.

I must be missing out on something here, the rave reviews relating to this Cafe prompted a visit, and seriously failed expectations. The staff are hardworking, efficient on a busy lunchtime session. There are 4 courses to select on the week,in a nutshell, lamb, salmon, venison & tuna.
My partner opted for lamb, and I chose venison. The land consisted of cold thin strips of meat, mostly inedible with high fat content/gristle held within an untasted English style muffin, together with a small mince patty and light salad. The meal was returned and replaced with the Salmon, not risking a 2nd go at the lamb. The Salmon was OK but again loaded with salad..
My venison was a decent size,med/rare and again mix of salad ingredients. This cafe could be a vegan retreat if not for the on mos dishes he small amount of fish/meat options added.
For dessert,we chose cheesecake and tart tartin. The cheesecake was more of a mousse and the tart tartin was not true to it's name with puff pastry base and a puried apple combination with small ice cream on the side.
2 glasses of white wine a complimentary coffe finished a very dissappointing lunch.
As per the going rate in Noumea, the total cost was Approx A$120.
We will not be returning.

Loved this restaurant so much we came twice!
Food is great, very homily and will be a treat for anyone who loves traditional Italian food.
Over the two times we dined here we tried: antipasto misti, prosciutto pizza, captures salad, gnocchi with red sauce, lasagne, apple strudel & tirramusu. Reasonably priced wine and good service.
Wait staff speak French (one lady could converse in English). To make it easier I google translated the menu after Reading reviews that there were no English menus- would suggest doing the same and saving screen shots.
Outside tables are nice but on a hot night it was equally as nice inside in the cool air Conditioning.
Short walk (15 minutes) from le Meridien hotel- the staff where more than happy to call a taxi to drop us off on the way home. Down the main road and turn at the intersection were the Hilton is located (same side of the road is where the restaurant is). Keep walking until you see a shell petrol station on your left and the restaurant will be 2m further on the right. You won't. Is the sign.
Really loved dining here as eating in noumea can be expensive. Would suggest walking here from anse vata to watch the sunset and then eating here!

The best thing is EVERYTHING. Quality oozes from what they offer. The decor is new, modern and clean. The cleanliness is very good although this can vary at busy times as in most places. So many individual flavours from tropical fruits to rich chocolates. All cones are presented as "flowers" Every staff member has to learn how to create ice cream "petals' and construct an ice cream or gelato flower shape on every cone. We did not have their waffles but observed other orders and they appeared special too. A must do experience in Noumea. There are other ice cream places but they do not hold a candle to this.

I visited this highly rated restaurant with great anticipation. Unfortunately I was disappointed....
It was a weekday and it was very full so service was almost non exsistance ( understandable especially I do not speak French ). Anyway, the manager gave me recommendation and it was tasty local food. However, I have experienced symptoms of typical MSG food: very thirsty when I was on the way back to hotel!

The busiest restaurant around Anse Vata beach. Moderately priced, and a good selection of specials. Staff are friendly, and the food arrives very quickly (as you'd expect!). Local and NZ meats, but frequently run out of local, so you need to level up in price to imported beef. Ate there twice, and good both times. Kid friendly, and you may need to book in advance as it gets very busy. Heineken is XPF750 a bottle (US$7.50) and local beer about the same.

We spent four days in Neumea, New Caledonia to celebrate my wife's birthday. From the reviews on Tripadvisor I decided to book at L'Hippocampe, and contacted THIERRY DELAUNAY-BELLEVILLE the Restaurant Manager Maître d’Hôtel to book a table for four on the night of the Birthday. We arrived at the restaurant earlier than planned but that was no problem and Thierry and his staff made us welcome and gave us an excellent table. Everyone chose a different entree - (but not the caviar !!) and different main course all of which were presented in a way you would expect at a top Michelin restaurant. The food itself was delicious and we all tried a portion of each others they were all so good. When dessert came Thierry had arranged for my wife's Lemon pie to have a lit candle and the plate decorated with "Happy Birthday" in chocolate. All the staff were attentive and pleasant and very professional in their service at table. It certainly made the night one to remember.

this a restaurant of traditional french cuisine of the south west of France (goose liver and staff).
Positive points:
- extremely generous in quantities. if you go there for lunch, skip your breakfast. if u go for dinner, skip your lunch.
- super quality food. the cook is the owner of the restaurant. he is passionate of cuisine, and always receive you with a welcome drink and two slices of goose liver with their toasts (so do not order goose liver for starter). he makes his owner balsamic cream, his own goose liver...
- service: at your full service. the lady is the wife of the owner, and the girl is an employee. both fantastically efficient. come around to gather a bit with you. full of positive vibes.
- inventive cuisine despite the transitional menu: you may have classic beef filet rossini (with goose liver) or you may have filet of fish with clams and staff, or you may also have crispy pouch of goose liver with salad and a little shot of sweet white wine. ...
- rustic decoration.
negative points:
- 22 persons capacity. you should book your table a bit in advance. going during the week end, book one month before, during the week, book one week before.
- indoor seats only. no terrasse. no view.
overall note: restaurant for gourmand and gourmets, if you want to eat diet, or eat a Sandwich this is not the good place. this is the place to enjoy rich generous french food of the south west.
