Apiria tavern is located in the tiny little mountain village of Emporios, 8 km away from the busy island center of Mantraki and is one of the two restaurants at this airy place. I visited both of them and left with very good impressions but i am reviewing Apiria because somehow it appealed more to me. The restaurant itself is housed in a beautifully restored two storey building with simple yet appealing decoration. Outside there is only a handful of tables but during peak season somehow it expands to serve more guests. The real beauty of this restaurant is the wide gamut of flavours in recipes with strong local character and identity. Delicious local cheese and cheese salad on dry bread, aubergines cooked in the oven with tomato and cheese, roasted goat with local herbs, garlic paste with almonds, briefly fried courgette flowers with herbs and cheese are amongst the local taste heaven you can indulge yourself in. Portions are generous, prices quite normal and customer service acceptable. The red wine was heavy but tasty and the raki (the greek version of grappa) splendid. If you want to seat outside you have to reserve a table and even wait a little bit, because it gets really crowded during peak season. Before treating yourself with a lavish gastronomic fiesta, wander around the ruins of the tinny village and enjoy the dramatic views over the volcano to complete a unique experience.

In a beautiful square of Nikia you will find Porta and Mr Panagiotis! Nice coffee, fresh orange juices, and something tasty to eat in morning, noon or night! The owner, Mr Panagiotis, i a lovely nisirios full of stories of the island! Definitely go there.

The view, as you walk onto the tiny upper Terrace, simply blows you away. Utterly amazing. At peak times you'll struggle to get a table here and most likely be relagated to the lower Terrace. Food is average taverna . . . . eg utterly flavourless 'Greek salads' most likely made with Dutch or Belgian greenhouse tomatoes. Why DO the Greeks do this when they have the most wonderful Sunshine and could grow outdoor tomatoes 'til kingdom come. Service ok. Mother is in the alk-through kitchen cooking. Prices very reasonable

Traditional Greek, Italian-Venetian cuisine, home-like hospitality where we hope our customer friends find a meeting point where to exchange travel ideas and live a common moment in front of a good dish. Pizza in stoneoven .
A good quayside location though can be chilly and windy at night in spring. As the chef is Italian and the proprietor is a Neapolitan we thought pizza was a safe bet especially as this early in the season the menu is understandably limited. However, the pizza was poor - raw beneath the topping with thick over-cooked crust. 17 euros with a small carafe of not very good white wine(rose was unavailable). We left half the pizza but our hostess decided not to ask or comment on that. The wonderful reviews are either by friends or we were very, very unlucky. Poor food is a common problem in Mandraki which, despite all its charm, caters for day trippers who eat lunch and go by 3.30 pm never to return. More might come back and stay if the restaurants were better! By the way Nikia and Emborios offer better quality food but it's hard to get up into the Mountains at night.

We visited the Limenari twice. The place is not so easy to find, half-way on the road from Mandraki to Paloi, hidden some 50 meters below the road above a stony beach. (Coming from Paloi there's an information/advertising sign.) Despite of this the tavern is not a secret anymore, since it is known even to tourists from abroad.
Although they serve very good local meat too, ask Urania the owner about fish or sea food. She will tell you about the specialties of the day. Urania's children will bring the dishes.
Very tasty the squid. Have a plate of the home made potatoes, so tasteful you wouldn't find easily in nowadays Greece.
Lovely sitting under the trees on the shady Terrace with the view over the sea.
Very good and helpful service.

This internet cafe was my savior when I could not connect to the internet in my hotel. Located by the water in the town of Mandraki. Just order a drink, enjoy the music, atmosphere and view. Mike the owner is very friendly and helpful!

All our ingredients are Greek. Vegetables, meat and fish are fresh and locally produced. The Captain (Giorgios) has 30 years' experience in command of merchant vessels and has his own fishing boat. He is an expert on the local area and sea conditions. Giorgio's wife Anna cooks family recipes. Motor bikes and bicycles are available for hire, laundry and showers offered.
The quality of the food is good. It is standard Greek fare and well priced. The thing that kept us coming back on our short stay to the island was the staff. They took great care of our young and adventurous niece. They are also the place to go for ice in harbor. All in all, it is a nice restaurant with good food and well-priced. You can't go wrong eating here.

The main traditional cafe-restaurant of the village, completely renovated. Serves coffee, breakfast, lunch and dinner with fresh vegetables, cheese and meat from the island. For those in a hurry we serve our homemade lemonade, fresh orange juice, homemade traditional sweets and ice-cream.
Its a sad fact that so much Greek food simply fails to live up to its promise because of poor flavour, especially poor vegetables. Greek has the most wonderful climate and the most wonderful herbs and spices, but so much of the food disappoints. But here, at Nicola's, things are different. She clearly takes a great pride in her cooking and the flavours are excellent. We had wonderful herb flavoured, slow cooked pork chops, preceded by a stunning tsatzici and an equally good hummus. We were also offered a taste of a brilliant pasta starter. The olives were particularly good and when we commented, Nicola came out and showed us the label of origin. That's a chef with pride.
This is a restaurant you could come back to again and again because of the cooking. And then, there's the setting, in the most wonderful tiny circular 'square'.
All in all, a brilliant experience, and Nicola, clearly a very cultured and caring lady, could certainly teach her fellow chefs a thing or two. The fact that she reads her reviews also says a lot about her desire to maintain high standards. Highly recommended. Prices are very fair too.
