Monreale (Sicilian: Murriali) is a town and comune in the province of Palermo, in Sicily, Italy. It is located on the slope of Monte Caputo, overlooking the very fertile valley called "La Conca d'oro" (the Golden Shell), famed for its orange, olive and almond trees, the produce of which is exported in large quantities. The town, which has a population of approximately 30,000, is about 15 kilometres (9 miles) inland (south) of Palermo, the capital of the island.

Before entering the Basilica in Monreale we were very hungry yet most restaurants appeared closed. We asked a local for a recommendation and he suggested the Pavone. On a piazza just before you arrive at the church, there is a small Fountain in the middle, is the small Taverna del Pavone. It is elegant inside, the staff are friendly and welcoming.
We ordered proseco and a rosso della casa with gnocchi with shrimps and risotto with salmon and grilled lemon.
In both cases, this proved to be the best food acquired in seven days in Sicily. After now 2 weeks in Roma, the Pavone ranks at the top of our restaurants visited on this trip to Italy. Bravo!

Set in the countryside, historical site since 1929, La Botte started as a wine retail shop, then became a tavern and in 1962 Cascino family transformed it in a top restaurant. The style is rustic but elegant, with a large, open fireplace, conserved over the years and a sheltered Terrace in the garden. This is a well-known destination for gourmets, offering typical Sicilian cuisine and a well-stocked wine cellar. In this restaurant the masters Salvatore and Francesco Paolo Cascino created the famous Ali Pascia (almond parfait with hot chocolate sauce). Closed in August

My friend asked for a pizza & was told the oven was off. My risotto did not have the ingredients written in the menu, & was nothing special. The woman serving food was very rude & offhand, so different to other places we ate in, around the area.

We enjoyed an excellent pizza here in a very cosy setting tucked away near the Cathedral. The restaurant was extremely busy towards the end of the evening, but that might have been because there was a festival on. In any case we would recommend going early, maybe about half seven.

Excellent lunch
The little entrance, near the Cathedral hides a surprisingly good meat specialized cuisine. They have an extraordinary variety of meat from all over the world. Everything is grilled or prepared in front of the customers. The appetizers and side dishes were also marvelous. The wine list has very good price/performance options and last but not least the service is friendly and efficient. A place to return !

simple but very tasty food. Try the clava turca. It is a very special pizza with openings like some pastry filled with tasty cheese, sausage and herbs

The Terrace of this restaurant has a sweeping view of Palermo, its harbor and the
Mediterranean beyond. We went on a Sunday afternoon after Mass in the Monreale Cathedral. We were six. We stayed for 3 hours. The food was great, the wine was terrific but best of all the service was warm, friendly and attentive. Most everyone else there that day seemed to be families doing the same thing as us, enjoying the afternoon after Sunday Mass.

We stumbled upon this joint by chance in a local neighborhood. Great vegetarian pizza, even for a meat lover like myself. We also had stinco di maiale, the roasted pork knuckle, which truly did Sicilian pigs justice. Excellent change of pace after days of pasta. Worth the drive to the hood.

We were looking for a place to eat after having visited the monastery and before going to the Cathedral. We stumbled upon Osteria pub Peper's. We had very nice food: some opted for a salad, others for spaghetti or meat. The only negative point was that it took very long before we finally had our food. We didn't mind too much, because we were waiting for the Cathedral to open, but otherwise this would have been a nuisance.
