Antica Osteria Tremona

Reviewed By globesurfer2015 - Basel, Switzerland

Antica Osteria is a hidden perl in Tremona, a small town 15 minutes by car from Mendrisio and to the popular outlet "Fox Town". My wife, newborn son and two friends had a cozy dinner in the Antica Osteria. The host accommodated us at a nice and large table, so that we also had enough room for the stroller. The ambience is great, with a large fireplace irradiating a romantic atmosphere throughout the dining room. Food is great, with a great balance between meat, seafood and vegetarian dishes. As everywhere in Switzerland, prices are higher than in Italy, but the value is great. You get what you pay for. The wine card is great too, offering some excellent local wines, mostly Merlot.

Our 2nd visit to this restaurant, in a quiet back street of Mendrisio, and really cannot fault it. The service, ambiance and food are all top quality. The maitre'd in particular - his depth of knowledge of the dishes, the ingredients providence etc are 2nd to none, and make the place a real pleasure to visit. The weather helped of course - a beautiful sunny early evening with views from the back garden into the high Mountains around - it all made for a fantastic evening. The menu is extensive, the wines really top quality and mostly from the local vineyards. Has to be one of the best places I've eaten in for a long time, and would totally recommend it to all others.

This place is located just 50meters from the Railway station of Mendrisio.
It's NOT a restaurant, but an Ice-cream shop! It's very well known for the Ice-creams you can get there. The quality of the products is very good. You can even take ice-creams away. The perfect place for a dessert!

This is a grotto (restaurant) where they serve the local food from Ticino like polenta, rabbit, etc. The also have a large choice of grilled meat. I suggest "costine di maiale" (grilled ribs, Ticino style).
The restaurant is located 2km from the centre of Mendrisio direction "Valle di Muggio", just before arriving at the small village called Castel S.Pietro. the grotto is located in the woods, away from the traffic or streets, but it's good indicated. Free parking.
Ambience: very nice expecially outside. They have a big garden/square plenty of tables unter the threes.
Suitable for families with children too. They have a small garden where the children can play while the adults are eating.

Antico Grotto Ticino

I went with some friends there and we ordered traditional food on the menu. The food was good, but the price are crazy. We spent nearly 100 Swiss franc each, that because we ask for a second portion and they made us to pay as was another plate. Awful!

This lovely little *Garden Tavern" is located in the heart of Morbio Inferiore, a village situated in the hills overlooking Mendrisio and Chiasso, in the southern part of Ticino near the border with Italy. Once surrounded by vineyards and other agricultural activities, today Morbio Inferiore is a residential suburb for the affluent 'ticinesi' working in the nearby cities of Chiasso or Mendrisio. The tavern is in what presumably was once an ancient residential home, next to the main square, the village council building and the ever-present village church. The discrete setting is therefore ideal for a romantic tête-à-tête, a dinner with friends or family, even - why not? - a luncheon among colleagues or with clients. The menu is complete, with starters, firsts, seconds and desserts. For each, there is a choice of 4-6 dishes, all seasonal and all rigorously homemade. For seconds, on top of meat or other seasonal dishes, there is a selection of polenta (a corn-flour staple in Ticino and northern Italy) served with the typical 'brasato' (pot roast), 'funghi' (porcino mushrooms), or a hearty slice of gorgonzola cheese. Vegetarians need not worry, as the menu has several non-meat dishes. (The evening I went there they didn't serve risotto, but I am quite sure they do on a regular basis, it being other staple food in the region together with polenta.) The wine card is rich and, in my opinion, well balanced between local wines (Ticino produces mainly red Merlot) and Italian ones, even 'important' reds such as "Le Grive" (Piedmont) or "Peppoli" (a well-known chianti from Tuscany), to name just two that caught my attention. I had a starter and a main course, followed by dessert and a glass of local red. The portions are not large, neither small, suitable therefore for the gourmet and for the gourmand alike. If you are a gourmet, you can go with the full 3-course meal, plus dessert, and still leave the place on your own two feet. If you're a gourmand, well, you can always as for extra polenta...
I will certainly visit again this cute and friendly restaurant, where homemade cuisine is one of its trademarks, the others being the good service, well-presented dishes, and the discrete rural-with-a-modern-twist atmosphere.

Ristorante Pizzeria Stella

Walking in the old neighborhood of Mendrisio, I was attracted by this property because it was crowded; which I think is mostly a good sign.
As the heading says, this restaurant offers a wide selection of pizzas. But I wanted to try other dishes.
So I ordered an appetizer, a main course and a dessert: "Tomino" cheese baked with grilled zucchini; risotto with apples and Taleggio cheese; nougat parfait. Everything was good or very good (except perhaps that the risotto was a bit too much salty for my taste).
The service was courteous. As I said, the restaurant was packed: in particular there were large groups of families with children, perhaps because they were celebrating the last school day. Then I was afraid of being neglected and wait a long time. In fact I didn't wait little, but not even too much; and in any case the waiter spontaneously kept me aware about the progress of my dishes (I think this form of customer focus is important).
The price for the foods I mentioned, plus a glass of good local white wine, and a water bottle, was over 56 CHF. A normal price for Switzerland, then high for most of the other European countries. But this is common knowledge. In any case, I recommend this restaurant.

We were traveling through and had read about this place. Followed the signs and were convinced we were lost as we started going off-road, but finally came across it tucked away in the mountainside.
I was welcomed at the car park by a friendly dog, and the greetings by the staff upon entering were just as warm. The kids enjoyed playing bocci while we sipped on some great local wine from Ticino ( surprisingly great single-varietal Merlots) and the food was delicious.
Keep in mind they only take cash, so bring Swiss francs! I had forgotten, and in spite of the staff being accommodating and offering to let me pay the next day, I was able to do a bank transfer into their account...which they seem to be prepped for in case you forget cash.
Would absolutely return.
