In October 2015 the redherring was successfully acquired by Andrew Kettlewell & Monica Gilligan, who bring with them over 10 years experience in the sector and together with a young and talented chef, Hayden Green, have over the past 17 months put together a business that strives to be everything that a quality food led establishment should be. Featuring a very regularly changing menu allows us to serve what is at its very best at any given time of year whether it’s the seasons first asparagus, fall fungi or quality game throughout the colder months we passionately believe in the ingredients we put on your plate and hope you will agree! We are also fortunate enough to have strong relationships with some of the finest spirit suppliers in the country and have what is quite possibly the most extensive back bar around, boasting a smorgasbord of artisan 50 plus gins & vodka’s as well as over 30 select rum’s, cognac’s & single malt’s. We also understand that good food is made better with good wine so to that extent we have carefully chosen a list that balances exciting new world wines with some classic old world heavy weights. Our wine list like our menu is updated with the seasons. On Sundays we offer classic roast dinners with everything you would expect from locally sourced meat to proper in season vegetables and stock gravies – certainly not your typical roast! With our newly opened private dining room which has its own bespoke tasting menu, we strive to ensure everybody enjoys every moment they spend with us.
I had booked a table for three at Red Herring for a Friday evening for a meal with school friends. Shortly before we arrived I received a phone call informing me that the whole area around the restaurant was without electricity and therefore they were not certain that they would be able to serve us. We turned up anyway, if only to drink and we were given a table at the back of the restaurant where the chef had set up two hot plates.
The chef said that the only thing he could offer was mussels and chips and this we duly ordered. It felt that we were the only people eating in the place and for that we were grateful. It is hard therefore to do a proper review; that will have to await a visit in more auspicious circumstances. But Red Herring scores highly in terms of the adaptability and willingness to serve in difficult circumstances.

This modest establishment, well away from the centre of town, is certainly worth finding.
This return visit quite simply added to the enjoyment of the first visit.
The setting is simplistic but with friendly and attentive service, enhanced with decent table ware and linens.
The meals and tastes that are offered from an obviously excellent chef are outstanding.
No more to say! Visit and enjoy.

Scratch hand made stone baked pizza, fish, omelette, steak, pasta and some caribbean dishes available too. Home cut chips (double fried). Traditional tiramisu, gluten free cake & muffins. We are fully licenced & prefer to provide customers with our own cake at parties. Please book as we can get a little busy!We enjoy our days and nights and hope you do too (bring your sense of humour!)Come in and have some fun!
One of my favourite places to eat in Lowestoft! Desmond always gives me a huuuge jacket potato, gets better n better everytime. The blonde waitress noticed my friends little boy getting a bit antsy so she popped some crayons and a colouring sheet in front of him! Thought it was really sweet. Will always recommend.

We have dined here many times both at lunchtimes and evenings. We have yet to have had any meal that has not been really good. Whether it's fish, burgers, pies, special dishes al, come cooked to perfection and plenty on your plate. The staff are really friendly and the service excellent. Nothing is ever too much trouble here and if you want to slightly vary the menu the chef always obliges.
The other big advantage here for us is that we have a disabled friend who is wheelchair bound and the facilities here are really good. You can drop off right beside door and park nearby. There is a double door for ease of access and level area inside close to disabled toilet. Plenty of space to get wheelchair up to table.
If you have a disabled person in your group I recommend this venue and suggest calling in advance to book so you get a table suitable for wheelchair.
Keep it up Harbour...see you very soon.

i came here to celebrate one of my brothers fiftieth birthday after one of the other brother sad how good the place was . I was really looking forward to the evening after driving 170 miles to attend. We placed our order which the waiter managed to get wrong missing one of our group's main course and when the food came out my chicken passanda was completely stone cold and tasted granular. In fact it was the worse curry I've had in a umber of years. The chef did come out and apologise to one of my brother and took the late main course off the bill. Personally I was disappointed by the place and if this is what is regarded as a good restaurant in Lowestoft. I won't be in any hurry to eat here again.

I chose this restaurant as it was close to my bed and breakfast and the menu looked good.
The garlic mushrooms on cheesy toast was very good, and I chose a special , trout with Asian salsa with homemade chips and salad which was great. Chef even gave me the recipe for asian salsa. Even better still you can take your own wine for a small corkage.
Owned by a lovely couple where nothing is too much trouble.

The Commodore Serving Food - Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Sunday - 12 - 8 Thursday, Friday, Saturday - 12 - 9
The Commodore is a really nice classy place to go and enjoy some food and drink with views over the broads, especially at sunset, hard to beat.
The times i have visited i have always eaten from the hamburger selection and eveytime just superb. A friend of mine tried one of their pizzas which, mmmmm was not really looking or tasting good at all, so maybe it's hit and miss with the pizzas!
Overall love this place.

We love this cafe. On the north beach so you can smell the sea breeze, and take a nice walk afterwards along the beach or in Sparrows Nest. The breakfast is amazing and the toast is like you've never had before. We go here every time we visit my hometown

What better way to spend a cold winters afternoon than enjoying afternoon tea at the Patisserie. We enjoyed the festive version which came with a warming glass of non alcoholic mulled wine, delicious sandwiches, scones and a range of fancy cakes and puds - all washed down with a large pot of tea! For a coeliac this place is heaven as I enjoyed the full range of goodies offered to my friend. So lucky to have this place on my doorstep.
