La tavola italiana

Reviewed By Christophe M - Paris

Restaurant hidden in a villa on Route de Didier. Looking like a family trattoria. Often packed with regulars. In the long dining room the wooden bar, portait photos on the yellow walls, black and white checkered tiles create a charming outdated atmosphere.
Pleasant to taste traditional Italian specialties like a Spritz as aperitif, octopus salad, fagottini, Emiliana tagliatelle, zucchini and tomato linguine, gnocchi al gorgonzola, a glass of Lambrusco. Friendly and efficient service, decent prices. La bella vita.

The Crew offers a very homey atmosphere with all tables taken, loud, happy conversations all around, and a very tasty dinner to boot. Service was slow but perhaps that's what vacations are all about, after all.

Garage Popular

Newly opened in August 2011. At the moment the bar/restaurant to be in Fort de France.

Reviewed By ZRoyer - Fort-de-France, Martinique

Great bar with a very upbeat friendly we-are-all-friends-here ambiance. Good service at the bar. Reasonable prices as far as bars go in Martinique. It's really all about the ambiance at the Garage. It's ALWAYS swinging. Whether you dress up or down you'll fit in wonderfully. The one minus for me is the inside smoking that smoking patrons love but it can be a real bother sometimes when you have to leave because your eyes are burning from all the indoor smoke. There's an indoor and outdoor (across the street) part to the bar but the lines got blurred over time I guess. There used to be a device that pulled the smoke away in the inside bar. Doesn't seem to work anymore. I still give Garage 4 stars for the great ambiance and the good service from staff. I always feel good when I go there.

Le Petit Tonneau

Reviewed By FilsProdigue - Houston, Texas

How did an authentic Portuguese restaurant finds it way to Martinique? Go figure! But its the real deal. Tucked away on the Avenue Frantz Fanon near the Bellevue Catholic Church; this eatery delivers.
Not fancy by U.S. standards; it is clean, it offers an air conditioned dining room and agreeable staff. Maria, the Portuguese owner, has a winning smile and golden touch. Her Petite Tonneau offers a welcomed break from the monotonous Caribbean cuisine.
Escargots, Frog legs, Duck, Kidneys, steaks and so much more.
I'm all about the escargots. They are as good as what you might find at Paris' Chez Eux --- wonderful butter and garlic sauce to sop up with bread.
My favorite main dish is the "Bacalhau A Gomes De Sa" or Salt Cod, Onions and Potatoes. Its really a very hearty meal that is quite unique (and I'm not crazy about fish).
Salt cod has been produced for at least 500 years, since the time of the European discoveries of the New World. Before refrigeration, there was a need to preserve the cod; drying and salting are ancient techniques to preserve nutrients and the process makes the cod tastier. Maria tells me that they have to soak the fish for at least 48 hours and change the water out at least 4 times.
The dish is served with caramelized onions, diced baked potatoes in a delicious glaze and the wonderful cod in an indescribable sauce.
They also have a wonderful Portuguese dessert you must order at the beginning of the meal. I can't remember its name. Its terrific!
Its a good value for what you get; try it, I think you'll love it.

Le Babaorum was a refreshingly casual place for some good French food. Answering cell phones in the restaurant not allowed or they'll bring you Champagne that you'll be charged for...guess it's their way of helping you forget the outside world while you're there.

In the central market you can find this stall, where during lunch time fish dishes are served. The restaurant is very simple, but all the dishes tasted very well. Very good value for your money.

Chez Carole

Ate there for lunch and had a wonderful meal of local cuisine I would particularly recommend the chicken Colombo which is a local curry type sauce with super tender chicken that's been cooked for hours. As others have mentioned Carole is extremely friendly. You should also understand that when she starts bringing you stuff, like rum punch, it's all included in the cost of the meal.

Chez Genevieve

Reviewed By FDF-resident - Fort de France

Martinique is expensive, restaurants, even unassuming beach huts, are very expensive. Local cuisine is mostly found in not so great touristy restaurants, where you can meet all the other people freshly off the plane or the cruiseship. And then there are some places like Chez Geneviève (central market hall of Fort-de-France, first floor, right hand side).
A review of Chez Geneviève could really be very short: rum punch, starter, main course, wine, dessert, 14.50 euro, what else would one need to know? But let us be slightly less materialistic: first of all there is the atmosphere, the restaurant is on the first floor of the Fort-de-France main market where while eating one can observe people doing their daily shopping, fruit and vegetables - or all sorts of flavoured rum (and there are even some souvenir stalls).
The service at Chez Geneviève is friendly and most of the time fast. However, this is not a high-end eatery, so if you are after linen tablecloths, this is the wrong place. On the other hand if you are on holiday, you might like the discount coupons on your paper place mat.
While it is possible to have a main course for only 9 euro, it is really the set menu which should be recommended: punch or planters punch (or juice if you really insist), a starter, "accras" most of the time, and a main course from the board: fish, cooked or fried, octopus, chicken, accompanied by rice, red beans and various "legumes pays" (yams, bananas and such). Drinks with the main course, either wine or beer, are included and to conclude there is a choice between coffee or dessert.
The menu does not vary much, but the staples are always enjoyable. I would particularly recommend the "macadam" (cod in sauce with rice) – and if this is too bland for your taste, you can always spice it up with some "piment confit".
In short, there are four or five at first sight rather similar restaurants in the Fort-de-France central market, but Chez Geneviève is ahead in terms of food, service and location.

Le Vieux Foyal

Reviewed By gypsyatsea - Victoria, Canada

Went for lunch yesterday and chose the simple caribbean chicken. Was excellent with just the right amount of spice and served with a cornucopeia of Caribbean vegetables. It reminded us of eating in Penang. A lovely backyard patio. Narrow and intimate with a veritable jungle of plants providing a lovely garden setting. Would love to go back for sampling more and to listen to the jazz. Thank you for a lovely break to the hectic streets of Fort-de-France.
