Kingston Farm is a small peaceful guest farm in the rural Eastern Cape. The main building dates back to 1902 and has been carefully restored. There is also an award-winning restaurant on site. There are three separate apartments available. One has two bedrooms and is ideal for families. The second apartment has a king-sized bedroom and the third has two large single beds, which can be made up as a double. All of the apartments have an en-suite bathroom with separate bath and shower as well as kitchen facilities. There are barbecue facilities in the Gardens for guests to enjoy and free wi-fi throughout. We are a working farm with appaloosa horses and we also raise our own ducks. The restaurant serves a three course prix-fixe menu for both lunch and dinner as well as a very good breakfast for guests. Reservations for all meals should be made in advance. There is also a bar where we stock the locally produced craft beers and the prestigious wines of Thelma Mountain Vineyard. We are situated just outside of the village of Bathurst, which is between Port Alfred and Grahamstown. There is a wealth of history in the area as well as the beautiful coastline and natural bush.
I drove up to Kingston Farm specifically for dinner on a stormy Monday night from Port Alfred. I found that the owners had opened the restaurant just for me. I was really delighted and impressed. The 3 course meal was scrumptious. Gnocchi and prawn starter, light and delicious, with fresh tomato and gruyere sprinkling; rare rack of lamb with lovely veggies (cous cous, asparagus, roasted veggies, little potatoes, and citrus crème brulee with berries to finish. Very reasonable at approx R400 with wine. Beautiful farm house interior, lovely ambience. Cannot be faulted in any way. Will definitely return when in Grahamstown for festival in July. Only 16 kms from Port Alfred and 40kms away from G/town. You will not be disappointed!

The "Wharf Street Brew Pub" is situated on the historic Wharf Street in Port Alfred. It is housed in the oldest commercial building in Port Alfred completed in 1853. The decor is simple with pictures of old Port Alfred being the focal pointWe have micro Brewery attached to us and sell three of our own beers. Our food is a selection of Pub Style food like fish and chips, schnitzels and burgers ranging to freshly caught line fish, in house matured steaks and a host of other things in between. We pride our selves on good food and service so please pop in if only to sample our local brew, you might well end up staying for a bite to eat as many do after seeing our menu.
Amazing that a small town like Port Alfred can host a first class micro brewery. The associated restaurant is much more than a pub. Try the Kob or the Calamari . Burgers also substantial and good.

Most enjoyable meal, with both the calamari and fried aubergine starters being excellent. The Kingclip (and chips) was excellent, very tasty and beuatifyully cooked. Service was quick with friendly staff.
My only complaint - the ginger cat being allowed to roam around the various tables. Not acceptable in this day and age.

...when you dine here! Generous portions on offer and quality of food is good. Service a bit erratic especially as the restaurant started to fill up, but pleasant and cheerful staff. Nice setting with outside tables and upstairs Seating too. Would recommend and would return.

The Historic Pig and Whistle Restaurant is housed in The Historic Pig and Whistle Inn. The Pub serving the Restaurant and Inn is the oldest continuously Licenced Pub in South Africa. The sense of history can almost be touched in this wonderful old place. The Restaurant consists of two locations. The timeless and popular verandah which adjoins the street as a sidewalk cafe where you can enjoy a grilled fish, steak or enjoy a coffee and the signature lemon meringue tart and watch the passing parade in this quaint village. Alternatively, the Historic Dining area has recently (in September 2011) been refurbished with a focus on its historic roots. The restaurant is popular for its traditional Sunday Roasts. Affordable family fare is the order of the day.
A last minute decision to head to the pig and whistle, and what a great decision!! Absolutely delicious meal, home made burgers - yum yum and scrumptious prawns. And our waitress Bukie - excellent. But the night got better...live band BJ Ford, Pee Wee & Gordon. Entertained the entire night, what a Jol! If you get a chance to see them, do it!!!

Graze by the River is a coffee bar and bistro situated in one of the original 1820 settler's home next to the banks of the Kowie River in Port Alfred. The venue boasts a private garden area at the back of the property where you can escape from the busy Van der Riet street at the front of the property and enjoy freshly roasted coffee or sample some of the many homemade dishes on offer. The menu is based on locally available produce from fresh seafood, smoked meats and organic vegetables grown in the garden on site, interesting tasty dishes are supplemented by daily specials. The restaurant has its own smoker for preparing a lot of the dishes and the coffee bar roasts its own green beans daily ensuring good quality fresh coffee. So whether your looking for a great breakfast, some coffee and cake or a tasty homemade meal come and enjoy the experience of Graze by the River. Evening meals are strictly by reservation and we are closed on Wednesday.
Nick, the chef/owner is passionate about his food and where he sources his ingredients. Fish, meat and vegetables are obviously very fresh and of good quality, and he turns them into some great dishes, particularly the ones on the daily "specials" board which are always delicious.
We've eaten there 3 times recently, often taking guests, and never been disappointed.
Service is always excellent, with Nick introducing his specials in his own inimitable style, then taking the time to get feedback from each guest once served.
This is best restaurant in town right now in our opinion.

We were looking for a coffee and a light lunch.and spotted this secluded little courtyard with a table under the shade of a gorgeous bouganvillia. (can't spell it!) Service was first class and very friendly. Couldn't rave about the food - but it was tasty and well presented. One of the highlights was the site of a nest in a tree overlooking the courtyard containing a pair of black crowned night herons with their (well grown) young. The waitress brought us a pair of powerful binoculars so that we could see them better. One of the more interesting eating out places in the town.

As usual the food and the ambience cannot be faulted. We had a wonderful meal and the crème brulee is still the best ever. I am decidedly out of touch when it comes to paying 'corkage' though. It was a birthday celebration and a friend had taken a special bottle of wine, we were informed that the corkage was R100... a bit excessive we thought. We have no problem with the wine list so we happily chose something off their list.

We are passionate about quality coffee and food. Our unique setting coupled with our 1st class service will always leave our customers wanting more and returning :)
We had the bacon and mushroom quiche, and the calamari platter. We sat outside on the deck and everything was lovely. The food was fresh and delicious - loved the quiche (i took some of my wife’s coleslaw and it was so good). The location of place is nice - especially during summer or dusk! I’d surely stop here again if i’m in PA.

Odette and her team absolutely LOVE what they do and it shows! The service is fantastic, the food totally delicious and the setting just beautiful. We have been to the Fig and Daisy many many times and will continue to do so every time we are in the area. The shop is wonderful and supports local crafters, there is always something lovely to touch and to buy. Take your time, The Fig and Daisy is one of the most fabulous places to spend time at - you will thank me, I promise!!!
