Things to do in Bad Harzburg

We were on holiday in Bad Harzburg at the end of August and, on turning up at only 6pm, we were lucky to get one of the last tables, as most were already booked. There were plenty of tables outside - so not such a problem for lunches - but it would be advisable to book for an evening meal, if during the tourist season/holidays.
The menu was extensive, with lots of choice for both meat eaters and vegetarians.
There were plenty of authentic dishes to choose from too - such as moussaka, pastichio, souvlakia, gyros, kalamari, etc.
Portion sizes were large and we probably wouldn't bother with a starter if we came again.
For main courses I had the moussaka and my husband had one of the meat platters.
Both were obviously freshly cooked, tasty and very good.
There was a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere and the restaurant was nicely decorated inside.
Staff were friendly.
We were offered an Ouzo at the end, but declined as it's not something I enjoy. We were pleasantly surprised to be offered an Expresso instead, on the house, which we thought was a lovely gesture.
We tried to go back again shortly before returning home, but were disappointed to find that we had left it too late and the restaurant had closed for its holiday.
We'd highly recommend the Kreta and encourage you to give it a try.

Firenze has an excellent menu selection of pastas and pizzas as well as an extensive wine selection. We ordered fettuccine bolognese al forno and pork medallions and both were excellent meals. Our second time there, we chose their house pizza. Awesome tasting! Wonderful service and atmosphere!

This attractive restaurant is bright and modern. I dined here on two evenings of my stay at the hotel, and enjoyed everything I ate. Unsurprisingly, it was not cheap. Fleets of staff ensure everything ticks along smoothly, and the maitre d' makes a point of visiting every table - a nice touch, I thought.

If you have time for a detour while visiting Braunschweig in Northern Germany, check out Café Winuwuk in the Harz Mountains (they have a website with the very unusual history of the café which dates back to the thirties).
There is usually a fire crackling in the fireside and the cakes are out of this world! Very friendly waitresses.
Except of Sundays there is a craft workshop which sells beautiful wooden art (I started my collection of small wooden boxes in 1967 at the Winuwuk and these days I have a hard time finding more small wooden boxes), no kitsch for sure.
Check out the opening times of the craft store as it doesn not open before afternoon and is not open every day.
The houses look like big mushrooms right out of some fairytale...

This restaurant is easily accessible by bus/car as well as bike or on foot. It somehow manages to give the feeling of being more remote, due to its scenic location near a lake and being screened from the roadway by trees.
There are plenty of inside and outside seats - with the garden Seating area looking as though it could fit tens of people on a sunny day.
We visited twice during our stay - once for beer and hot pretzels (good!) and once for a meal. Both times staff were pleasant and efficient.
The Kostrizer bier was great - very dark and tasty and well worth a try.
The menu choice was good and fairly priced. I'd recommend the Kaiserschmarren - which was authentic, a good portion size and was served piping hot and freshly cooked.
My husband had the trout - which somehow they had managed to completely de-bone but leave as a whole fish?!
It was very good - perfectly cooked, moist and tasty.
This is a nice, friendly restaurant in lovely surroundings with plenty of capacity and a good menu.

Many restaurants still allow smoking but I didn't smell it in the Hexenklause! I was also very happy with their Gluhwein and Käsespätzle. Their waitresses were very friendly.

Only positive things to be mentioned: Rich cake assortment, very good and wide range of well prepared coffees and teas, excellent hand-made biscuits and confectionary to take home. Service sometimes just a bit under stress.

We had a diverse party of 8 people for a birthday celebratory lunch (teenagers, seniors, middle aged) and while it was a perfect day to dine in the garden and the setting is outstanding, we decided to stay inside. With the large windows, space and views to the outside is was a perfect setting. The food, service and location were excellent - outstanding really. Light, bright, airy and charming - just like the town. Don't miss a walk around the area post-meal…it's a quaint authentic German village.

We went into the shop & ordered 2 pizzas.
At the time the chef was rolling out hand made pizza bases and the stone oven was lit.
We returned 15 minutes later and our pizzas were just being taken out of the oven & put into boxes.
They smelled lovely, had crisp golden crusts, were hot, tasty and had plenty of topping. At 7 Eur each they were good value for money.
We recommend Pizza Treff & we would definitely go there again.

We have been wanting to try the pizza at Allegro for some time and finally made it. Warning, the café is very small so you may want to make Reservations. At 3PM on a Saturday we had to wait a bit for a table.
My wife ordered a gemischte (mixed) and I ordered a scharfe (spicy), and they were delivered quickly. The pizza here comes on a lavosh-like crust which was excellent. (I have had it before in the States, but this was my wife's first experience, and I think she was quite impressed.) Both pizzas were flavorful and satisfying. Personally, I think the sauce makes the pizza, and honestly good sauce can be hard to find in Europe, but Allegro nails it. My scharfe had hot salami, peperoni and lots of jalapeno peppers. I like spicy food, and this did not disappoint. I tasted my wife's as well, and it was delicious as well, with ham, salami and mushrooms.
My wife ordered the special of the day after dinner, a cappuccino and a homemade slice of cake, her choice was a mandarin cheesecake. Of course I had to help her and it was wonderful.
My only complaint would be that it took some time to get a fresh drink, and the check was hard to come by, but my wife keeps assuring me that this is just a very German thing, and it wasn't a big enough deal to change my rating. We will be going back to explore the menu further.
