This Goldsmith of eating well regales us with seasonal dishes where the palette of flavors and colors, contrasting textures, the accuracy of firings are hit the mark of excellence

Reviewed By patrickm123 - Moreton-in-Marsh, United Kingdom

We have eaten here quite regularly in the last couple of years, as Amiens offers a convenient stop-over near the channel, and always with total satisfaction. Indeed, I have reviewed it once before. However, on this visit we felt the chef had achieved a very rare kind of greatness.
There is nothing showy or theatrical about this cooking, no high-tech presentation, no decoration for decoration’s sake. But behind the apparent simplicity of the dishes lies a complexity, a refinement, and a harmony of flavours that is often astonishing. We struggled to think of anyone comparable, without going back to the likes of Michel Guerard and Marc Meneau in their heyday. In modern times we could only come up with the Ledbury in London, but that has two Michelin stars, with vastly higher prices, and its tables are almost unobtainable!
This is not to say that the combinations of flavours here lack originality. The starter on our 4 course surprise menu comprised marinated sardines, peas, spinach puree, tarragon and peanuts. Who knew that these were a perfect marriage just waiting to be uncovered – especially the inspired inclusion of the chopped nuts which gave an earthiness that perfectly underpinned the tang of the marinade? Hundreds of other chefs might have dreamed up the rest but not, I reckon, this final touch of genius.
In other cases, classic marriages of flavour are presented in fresh new ways that manage to distil what seems like the purest expression ever of those familiar combinations. A second starter, for instance, featured a single ravioli-like parcel containing smoked haddock and a perfectly “soft-boiled” egg yolk. Every chef knows how well poached eggs compliment this fish, but here the chef had spotted the fact that the white of the egg is superfluous and figured out a way of putting the spotlight firmly on the yolk and the haddock.

There’s no lack of sophisticated technique, but it’s always quietly unobtrusive. The fish in the main course looked for all the world like a sumptuous piece of plump roast turbot, but it turned out to be the lightest of mousses made with the much humbler whiting. And this proved to be anything but arbitrary. The lightness of the mousse contrasted wonderfully well with the denser but delicate gnocchi surrounding it and any humbleness in the fish department was fully compensated by the hugely generous shavings of summer truffle and the rich creamy sauce that pulled everything together.
We had the matching wines to accompany each course and these showed a similar level of inspiration. The choice of a Gewurztraminer with the haddock seemed surprising at first: there were none of the spices in the dish, such as might often be associated with the grape variety. But it quickly reminded us how many other more obvious wines would simply have been wiped out by egg yolk.
Equally a red Saint Joseph seemed a strange choice to go with a dessert. But then the dessert arrived and it made perfect sense. The centre piece was an ice cream made with “libeche”, a member of the celery family. It was barely sweet (the accompanying cherry puree only slightly more so) and was so much in synch with the elegant dry wine that it was hard to imagine anything else working half so well.
OK the total package cost 75 Euros a head, but most of the very few restaurants that could have rivalled this would cost double that or more. And for much less, away from the weekend, there’s an excellent menu for not much more than 30 Euros (plus wine of course). It was packed on a Saturday evening but is often quiet midweek. It deserves to be full to bursting every time it opens its doors.

This is a very good modern brasserie. Not the most characterful room in an unassuming building but it delivers good food and a good standard of service. All the dishes were particularly well presented for a restaurant in this price bracket, and most importantly all well cooked. Beef fillet topped with foire gras was generous in the extreme. Not the prissy round of a tournedos but a proper piece of meat. The highlight of four good courses. The wine order was complicated by the staff to the point of mild annoyance but the misseeving turned out as a decent bottle so the damage was limited. If there were more brasseries like this the world would be a better place and I would be fatter.

We live in Amiens and go every week to the restaurant. We compared almost all of them and finally decided that if you want to feel good, in a nice place, in winter as well as in the summer, to have an excellent meal and never be disappointed, we have to go to the Table du Marais.
The chef is very inventive and we always find some new delicious dish, as the succulent sauté d'agneau we had yesterday.
Plus, the service is at the same level, so...this is the best place to go in Amiens !

We came to this restaurant based on the reviews in Tripadvisor and it did not disappoint. The owner and chef spoke very good English and made his recommendation of "beef bun" (Vietnamese salad) which he said what his restaurant was know for. We ordered it and it was very good, lots and lots of beef, very generous portion. It was a bit salty for our palate, and I don't know if it came from the marinated beef or from the fish sauce. He prepared a small plate for my daughter with rice, egg rolls and beef as well, and gave some "chantilly" sprinkled with chocolate, which she ate it all. Her meal only cost 4 euros! The owner came and asked if everything was OK and if we liked the food. I would definitely go back if I lived closer.

I live in Amiens since 1994 but I didn't know this restaurant.
Thanks to trip advisor, I decide to try it and to invite my Darling for saint valentine. It was an great experience.
Many choice of fresh french dishes, well prepared and quick service. Staff is kind and really take care of you.
It is not really cheap because some extra fees have to be added on many dishes (from "ardoise" menu) and at the end bill is not so low.
Nevertheless, we really recommand it.

We stumbled across this small restaurant in the St-Leu district and were pleased that we did. Our grasp of French is rubbish, especially when discussing Japanese meal choices, but the staff were very patient.
Their menu was a little confusing as they offer lunchtime deals, buffet options as well as the standard 'a la carte' (I'm still convinced they charge you a penalty for any food you take from the buffet but do NOT eat).
The recommendations were good and food was served quickly.
I would definitely recommend.

A colleague and I decided to try this place during a business trip, after seeing their reviews on trip advisor. Was not disappointed! I was able to order a favorite vietnamese dish of mine using a photograph, since their menu was in French, and it was superb. Their dumplings and spring rolls likewise were excellent. On top of it all, the staff were incredibly attentive and friendly despite me not speaking the language.

What an amazing find. Weary from walking to find somewhere decent to eat we went into Petit Bonheur with no great expectations. We were absolutely amazed by the standard and quality of the food and the fantastic service in no way could it be bettered. The young maitre d showed us pictures of the dishes that they serve to help us in making our choices. Every course was excellent but very highly recommend the cafe Gourmands dessert. My husband started to cough and within seconds was handed a glass and a small carafe of water. Nothing was too much trouble and service was quick and efficient. Thank you Petit Bonheur for a lovely evening.

This place was recommended to us by the receptionist at the Chambres D'Amiens hotel and we were very impressed. Great French food with excellent service. The food was fresh, the menu featured speciality dishes of the region and the dessert selection (my fave course and often overlooked in France in my experience) was varied and excellent. We both had three courses and wine and paid €90. We have a new plan - when we come to France by Eurotunnel in future we will stop overnight at Amiens and eat here.

We booked for a party of 14. The staff looked after us really well, the food was superb, and the wine list was reasonably priced. Some very nice touches with two amuse bouche whether on the set menu or a la carte.
We ate in a could of restaurants over the weekend, and this was by far the best.
