The restaurant is located in the city centre, with a lovely Terrace overlooking the Tâmega river.
We stopped by Ze da Calcada around 7:30 PM on a Sunday evening and were seated right away on the riverside Terrace. But from there. things went downhill fairly quickly.
Though we did receive complimentary appetizers soon after we sat down, it took quite a while for our meals to arrive -- actually, only one of our meals arrived, since our second meal never got to our table.
While waiting for more than 45 minutes for our meals, we tried more than once to ask the waiter for some help, but it turned out that he didn't do anything to check on our order.
As we got fed up and decided to leave, the hostess asked us if anything was wrong. When we explained that only one of us had received a meal or a salad, she checked with the kitchen. From the confused look on the chef's face, it was obvious that she had never received our complete order from our waiter.
To compound matters, the staff did little at that point to persuade us to stay, and so we left (after paying for our one meal that did arrive).
It could very well be that we had a language barrier issue with the waiter and that things are more organized at Ze da Calcada at other times. But unfortunately for us, we had this very disappointing experience on a not-very-busy Sunday evening. For that reason, we can't recommend this place to others.

Located in a former distillery and inserted into the surrounding space of the Quinta da Pena, in Vila Caiz - Amarante, the "Pena - Restaurant & Bar" results from the rehabilitation of a historic space with a contemporary language. In a familiar environment, the space is divided between the living room set in the very mill, the bar-cellar suitable for a winter afternoon by the fireplace and a large Terrace that invites you to taste the house cocktails or dinner on the patio and under a candlelight on the hot summer nights. The gastronomy of the house will take you to the flavors so characteristic of our region, coupled with its outstanding creativity. In a refined place in its rusticity, the customer finds the flavors of the house and the region and also enjoys the tranquility reflected by the surrounding space consisting of the manor house and its Gardens, the woods and several secular acre farms. More than just a meal, we want you to live a unique moment. Make yourself at home ...
It can be a bit tedious getting to the place with GPS guiding the way that might lead to those little and weird passages. Anyway, this place is really a special one. The house is beautiful and well decorated. The owner surely has exceptional taste. People are nice. Food was excellent. Had beef Wellington and octopus and they were just delicious. Love this place.

I live in the same town as this restaurant and have been there many times. Last night we visited it again. Unfortunately despite the friendly service the food wasn't up to standard. The Posta á maronesa was very tough and stringy. I asked for salad and received vegetables! On the + side they did eventually bring a salad when I reminded them but I had to wait while it was prepared. I have enjoyed previous visits, especially in the summer as you can sit outside. Like many Portuguese restaurants there is a Television on all the time. This is very annoying and twice we had to ask for the volume to be lowered as we could not speak easily to each other. I cannot understand why a restaurant of this type needs to have one at all. It is not a cafe! The Vinho Verde wine from their own vineyard is delicious and very fresh.

This is the Portuguese equivalent of 'Pub Food' and has awards from the Portuguese version of Les Routiers". Good lively buzz at lunchtime and tasty local dishes served on bare wooden tables. Constant loud sound of a myner bird but sadly only an empty cage - perhaps they recorded it before it popped its clogs!

Nice and friendly staff but we found it a bit strange that we were the only guests this night. Food was OK.

We went there on purpose for the arroz de cabidela. Super well prepared and the portion was huge for two people. Staff are very friendly and the setting is simple but makes you feel quite comfortable. Well done, continue like that.

My wife and I stopped here for coffee and cakes. Excellent, traditional cakes are on offer. The interior of this riverside cafe is traditional, functional, very pleasant but not at all twee. Well worth a visit.

Restaurante especializado em Leitão Bísaro assado em forno a lenha. Também vendemos para fora leitão inteiro, meio leitão e ao quilo. Necessário fazer reserva.
We were brought here by some Portuguese friends who live 30 minutes away and we definitely saw why it was worth the 40 minute drive from where we ourselves were staying! We had the local delicacy of leitão (suckling pig) that is slow cooked and...MoreAgradecemos imenso o seu comentário. Sempre ao seu dispor, com os melhores cumprimentos, a equipa do restaurante Filhos de Moura.

You wont' have very much of a choice, but with the owner a fisherman himself it's a no brainer. Just trust what they offer for a simple yet great lunch.
