January 18, 2018 Venice Greaves

Zhytomyr (Ukrainian: Жито́мир, translit. Žytomyr [ʒɪˈtɔmɪr]; Russian: Жито́мир, translit. Žitomir; Polish: Żytomierz; Yiddish: זשיטאָמיר‎, translit. Žitomir) is a city in the north of the western half of Ukraine. It is the administrative center of Zhytomyr Oblast (province), as well as the administrative center of the surrounding Zhytomyr Raion (district). The city of Zhytomyr is not a part of Zhytomyr Raion: the city itself is designated as its own separate raion within the oblast; moreover Zhytomyr consists of two so-called "raions in a city": Bohunskyi Raion and Koroliovskyi Raion (named in honour of Sergey Korolyov). Zhytomyr occupies an area of 65 square kilometres (25 square miles). Its population is 266 936.

Sergiy Korolyov Astronautics Museum

Reviewed By Svitlana Z - Odessa, Ukraine

I was impressed. The museum consists of 2 buildings: a space exhibition and the house in which Sergey Pavlovich Korolev was born in Zhytomyr. The Space part works without a lunch break. There is a fee for photographing in the museum. It is better to have a guided tour, one will learn so much. Otherwise, it is possible to have an audio guided tour sitting in comfortable seats, hanging on ropes from the ceiling - space atmosphere indeed. The exposition is rich, informative and spectacular. There are models of spacecrafts, one of which was in the open space with autographs of 2 cosmonauts on it, as well as life-size precise models of artificial satellites, Lunokhod (a lab for operations on the Moon surface), space module "Vostok", orbital module "Soyuz", documents, pictures, space suites, personal belongings of the first conquerors of space and objects of their life in the orbit... There is a capsule with soil from the Moon (!) The only thing, that would make me even happier, would be a possibility to wear a space suite. Not available in the museum yet. However, there is a space suite (like the one G.Clooney had in "Gravity"), painted, with a hole for a head, where visitors can pose and have their picture taken. What a place!!!

I was lucky to visit the park during Indian summer with fall foliage, great weather and probably the last few days that Fountains were working. The view from the bridge was breathtaking.

If you are interested in Orthodox religious places, you sure want to see this one in Zhytomyr as well. It has blue royal-blue cupola which look very fancy. Please note a snake depicted in the small hall situated before the main hall of the church: the snake represents all sins of mankind - very impressive!

Zhytomyr Nature Museum

Reviewed By Jack e - Torquay, United Kingdom

Suddenly this museum is not open to the public any more as now it is a church I went looking for this but if you want to see all the staff other than the mammoth you can go to the Lore Museum which is about two minutes walk from this location of the old museum I found the museum very good and cultural but you would need someone who is able to translate into English from Russian or Ukrainian. In this museum they have paintings from Michelangelo and other various people of the art world also down in the bottom floor there is history from world War one and two also the 2014 Ukrainian war. Which I found very interesting and I would hope any foreign national with go and see the location the building simply amazing on its own but also have natural history such as birds of prey, golden eagles, Harris hawks and magpies and other various animals such as butterflies, beetles and semiprecious and precious stones and gemstones. This museum would take about one hour to walk around or if you have signed translating may be about 1 to 2 hours I highly advise you to take translator as it is more interesting. They are planning to bring back the mammoth but they need to have the money to build another room onto this medium as it is a pretty big exhibition. The overall cost of this museum for two people was 10 Ukrainian money which is about £0.35 which is very good value for a couple hours of interesting history the architectural structure of the building is also stunning.

The memorial has an eternal flame & is situated on the banks overlooking the River Teterev. There are many such memorials in Ukraine, but if you're in the area, this worth seeing, especially in Fall when the trees across the river form a beautiful backdrop. Also, there's a nice waterfall upstream.

St. Jonah from Duklya Cathedral

Reviewed By Jack e - Torquay, United Kingdom

St. Jonah from Duklya Cathedral this building is a less looking building “a beautiful city but to be honest right next door is the Saviour Transfiguration Cathedral within five minutes’ walk and this is just a simply amazing building Zhytomyr I would advise visiting both cathedrals because they are both well worth seeing are not very far apart you could probably spend two hours visiting both having a lovely day around half nearby which is about 5 to 10 minutes’ walk from Duklya Cathedral.
The this area city is safe and lovely area to walk around day and night yes there is not much English speaking people around but if you are with your family or a couple is perfect for me example me and my girlfriend lives in a flat about five minutes from both cathedrals and we walked most nights and days in the park and around the Cathedral this area of the city is also very green lots of trees and perfect for the people who are looking for a holiday getaway that is just simply different to what end holiday is more the venture and more of a cultural exchange and a holiday I would highly advise people coming to the city and having a look around.
