Yoshkar-Ola (Russian: Йошка́р-Ола́; Mari: Йошкар-Ола) is the capital city of the Mari El Republic, Russia. Its population is about a quarter million. Yoshkar-Ola means red city in Mari and was formerly known as Tsaryovokokshaysk (Царёвококшайск) before 1919, as Krasnokokshaysk (Краснококшайск) between 1919 and 1927 (both after the Malaya Kokshaga River, which runs through the city) and Charla (Чарла) (old Mari). Yoshkar-Ola was established as a military fortress in 1584, following the Russian conquest of the Mari region.

A unique piece in pewter displaying a rather wicked locking pussy cat. Great for children. Many other interesting features nearby; certainly worth a visit.

It certainly looks beautiful and brings a bit of color and life to this city, but I'm not entirely certain why it was constructed here. Perhaps this town is a popular destination for Russian tourists during the warmer months. Perhaps during the winter, they turn this area into an outdoor Winter Wonderland. I'm not sure and can only speculate, as it was dead quiet when I visited.
That being said - it is very pretty and well kept. The town seems to be receiving investments, as there are lots of new buildings, apartments, stores, and even a sports stadium in the area. Perhaps they hope to turn this into a new vacation destination. Either way, if you happen to be in this area and want to see a picture perfect replica waterfront, then you should definitely visit this attraction.

We stumbled upon it after shopping in a nearby grocery store. Right at noon on Sunday, we noticed a huge crowd gathered to watch this. Beautifully crafted life-sized figures moving slowly across the facade of the building. Some of them moved a little in life-like motions. The music is a great accompaniment to the show. The crowd was dead silent as the show progressed to its conclusion. Kind of eerie but with a peaceful feeling. A must see.

The old buildings of the town line each side of the boulevard. Nice walk through the town towards the embankment. Pedestrian zone so the kids can run around to their heart's content chasing the pigeons.

This is a nice park in Central Yoshkar-Ola. There is a war memorial where it is common for newlyweds to place flowers at an eternal flame and walls with names of those that gave their lives, in service of Russia. It is quite long and there is much to see along this boulevard...Nice walk through treed areas too...
