Weichang Manchu and Mongol Autonomous County (simplified Chinese: 围场满族蒙古族自治县; traditional Chinese: 圍場滿族蒙古族自治縣; pinyin: Wéichǎng Mǎnzú Ménggǔzú Zìzhìxiàn; Manchu: ᠸᡝᡳᠴᠠᠩ ᠮᠠᠨᠵᡠ ᠮᠣᠩᡤᠣ ᠪᡝᠶᡝ ᡩᠠᠰᠠᠩᡤᠠ ᠰᡳᠶᠠᠨ; Mölendroff: weicang manju monggo beye dasangga siyan) is a Manchu and Mongol autonomous county located in far northeastern Hebei province, China. It lies under the administration of Chengde City, and is the northernmost county of the province, bordering Inner Mongolia to the north. In terms of area, it is the largest county of Hebei, occupying an area of 9,058 km (3,497 sq mi), though, as it is located in mountainous terrain, it is rather sparsely populated, as of 2004, housing 520,000 people.

Espectacular entorno que se ve amenazado por la visita masiva de turistas, una invasión de coches, y plástico. Grandes praderas, grandes pinos, buen cordero y molinos de viento.

I had taken my family for a holiday to Chengde city because I wanted to see the historic sights there. However, that didn't take as long as I thought. So I was looking around for other things to do in Chengde. Searching in Chinese, I found that there are some grasslands in Hebei province, on the borders with Inner Mongolia. I thought this would be a novel experience for my family, so I choose one of the grassland parks and set off in that direction by car.
I didn't have very high expectations. I thought there would be an area of grassland and a touristy Mongolian themed site where we could spend an hour taking photographs and then head back to Chengde - I was far from correct.
Saihanba National Forest Park is massive. This is the worlds largest man-made forest park area. There are nearly half a billion trees in the park. Historically, the park had been part of the royal hunting grounds, however, at the end of the Qing dynasty, deforestation had caused the land to turn into a desert of sand and dunes. In the 1960's, China started to reforest the area, creating the Forests and grasslands that we see today.
It took about 3.5 hours to drive there from Chengde city centre. It took another 1.5 hours to drive the 60 km from the park entrance to my hotel. We ended up spending three full days in the park and had still only seen half of it.
Really, if you are coming here, you have to drive. There are tour buses that visit but they just take you to a few over touristy, famous sites. What you really want to do here is drive your car to some remote paddock, park and walk out into the grasslands alone.
Only when you are away form the other tourists can you see the nature of the place. You can spot rare flowers, unusual bird species, squirels and other animals. If you are a nature lover, this is the part of China you must come too.
However, when you come as part of a tour group, you are just going to see some trees, ride a horse around a field and think "uh?".
The park contains three zones, each about 40 or 50 km wide. The southern zone is the old royal hunting grounds. The landscape here is natural looking with old trees and grass land. The middles zone, where the main park entrance is located, is more artificial in apearance and very heavily forested with larch and birch trees. Most of the tour groups stay within this zone. The northern zone is actually over the border in Inner Mongolia. This is much less forested grass land with higher hills. This norther zone is also much less developed and recieves less tourists than the other areas.
If you want to see green Grasslands, come in late July or August. Idealy just after the summer suns but before the farmers cut the grass for hay. If you want to see the Forests, October probably provides the best display of autumn colours. There is a ski field in the park so it is probably worth a visit in winter too, though I expect it would be increadably cold. Because of the altitude here (about 1600 metres) the summer temperatures are very comfortable - warm but not hot with cool evenings.

This huge red building has some fantastic interior sites. Don't forget a ticket to this temple includes the Potala Palace Temple next door.
The temple has a very ornate roof, and there are great views of the Summer Mountain Resort Walls and the temple valley from the roof. The best views of Sumeru temple and from Puling Temple or the Resort's Walls. See my photos for good photo angles.

If they would have taken care at least a little on the nature. Unfortunately the area is now more like an entertainment park. Lots of noise and rubbish lying around everywhere. It's really a pity.
