What to do and see in Vernon, Canada: The Best Places and Tips

January 15, 2018 Giuseppe Pratt

Although perhaps less flashy than its southern Okanagan neighbors Kelowna and Penticton, Vernon is a year round getaway offering an abundance of fun attractions from sunny beaches and golf courses in the summer to powdery ski slopes in the winter. The area's back country trails provide great exploration points, whether by bike, horseback riding, hiking, snowshoeing or snowmobiling. The pristine scenery of the Rockies surrounds the valley's plentiful vineyards.

Okanagan Spirits Craft Distillery

Okanagan Spirits is Western Canada's oldest craft distillery spanning over a decade in the production of award-winning B.C. spirits. Internationally acclaimed as North America's only designated World Class Distillery (World Spirits Awards), our portfolio includes a range of spirits from Vodka, Whisky and Gin, to Liqueurs and Brandies (Eau de Vie) as well as Canada's first genuine Absinthe.

This is an absolutely incredible family run business that prides itself on making the best quality spirits possible from locally available produce. They have done a great job in curating the historical implication of their craft in the area and have integrated this into their facility in an almost museum like capacity. When you do a distillery tour, it quickly becomes apparent that they have made significant investment in equipment that allows them to produce the best quality products possible. The atmosphere is delightful. The staff are incredible and you are remiss if you don't make this a destination to visit if you are in the Okanagan. You will be impressed!

This is a mandatory stop whenever we are in the Okanagan. It's an interesting blend of fresh farm produce stand, grocery store, souvenir store, and a great ice cream stand. My son loves the unfiltered apple juice and it's a good price. The variety of activities at the farm make it "interesting". They have a great assortment of condiments that we love to peruse and we always try something different. One must definitely check it out at least once!

Historic O'Keefe Ranch

O'Keefe Ranch was founded in 1867 by Cornelius O'Keefe. His family lived on site for 110 years before it was opened as an historic ranch, meaning it still houses one of the most complete collections of one family's stuff (from the Victorian and Edwardian eras) in all of the province. Today O'Keefe Ranch is operated by a non-profit society and is a registered charity. Come visit us during our open season from May to October - stroll along the boardwalk, visit our original buildings (set up as they were more than 100 years ago!), visit the Greenhow museum, and go say hello to our many farm animals.

Loved this place, as did the wife and kids. Lots for us all to see and suitable for all. Exploring the various houses was really interesting and the tour around the mansion was well presented, interactive and fascinating. (Especially loved the music box!)
The museum was interesting and had just enough information and we even loved the (random) model railway.
They had a maize maize too which was great - have only ever done those in the UK before.
Kids loved the animals. I loved the old farm machinery. Wife just loved the whole place. Well worth going and well worth the entry fee. (They were advertising and setting up for a "Cowboy Dinner" that evening - we couldn't go, but it was looking like it would be awesome...)

Ellison Provincial Park

This provincial campground was our first stop on our vacation. Although it has only dry camping, our Pleasureway RV is fully equipped, making our two-day stay a pleasant one. Our space was surrounded by trees on two sides and afforded privacy without obstructing our views. We enjoyed the many hiking trails and hunted for geocaches in the area. Be careful as some of the trails are steep so take your walking stick and wear proper hiking boots. Gigantic Ponderosa pine grow in this park and provide shelter for the animals that live within its boundaries. We saw deer and chipmunks as well as different types of birds including crows, wood peckers and chickadees. Several sandy inlets are ideal for people swimming and there is even a special beach for your dog. Trails are well marked with signs posted concerning hazards.

Polson Park

Polson Park is located near the heart of Vernon, adjacent to Highway 97 and Highway 6. The park was established in 1908 when Samuel Polson donated a large parcel of land to the city. Located in the park is the Lawn Bowling Club, the Interior Space and Science Centre, the Arts Council and Vernon Heritage Hall.Polson Park is probably best known for the Floral Clock that was installed in 1958. The date is changed daily and it provides a great photo with its colourful background. Further into the park you will find the Japanese Garden, which was donated by the Japanese Community and the Chinese Pagoda, which was donated by the Chinese Community. Both were constructed in 1967 as Centennial Projects. The Rose Garden, a perennial favorite and also a Centennial project, is located in the south east of the park. Specific areas of the park can be reserved for your special event such as weddings, social gatherings and Concerts.

This park has been around for many decades. Great for weddings and such. Despite the last number of years the problem with vagrants and the police and or bylaw or government won't do anything about. We still enjoy going for picnics and filming. Still ok in daytime hours.

The building while dated, definately needs a good cleaning. Some exhibits were marked...MoreThank you for taking the time to give your feedback. We are always looking to improve.
