La Savane des Esclaves

Reviewed By Colin P - United Kingdom

We spent an hour and a half at La Savane des Esclaves, which was time well spent learning about the terrible experience encountered by those men and women who were forcibly taken from West Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries to work on the sugar and banana plantations in Martinique. It is easy to reach: look for the signpost on the left hand side of the road as you drive into Les Trois Ilets, just past the Vito garage and before the large roundabout - it is a couple of kilometres from there, south of the town. There is adequate space for parking. It consists of a collection of wooden buildings, attractively located amongst trees, bushes and flowers, depicting the lives of slaves, and their work and living conditions. You just follow the path and go at your own pace. There are notices everywhere providing helpful information in French and English. Highly recommended.

Editions and watercolors from Martinique, West Indies.Painters and travellers with a passion !SOPHEN sounds and looks like a Breton name, but it isn’t a breton name !SOPHEN stands for Sophie and Henry, the painters’ first names. In 1993 they opened the SOPHEN gallery in La Pointe du Bout, West Indies.

While in port during a recent cruise myself, my wife and some friends stopped in to check out the various artwork. Lots of wonderful prints and original works for sale reflecting the style and location of the island. We ended up purchasing a limited edition print. A wonderful representation of the island and a great memory. Our print was carefully packaged for us as well. A really nice experience.

We were on a Disney Cruise but discovered this zip-lining obstacle course on our own. Our party of 8 (four adults and four children; 10, 7, 6, & 4) LOVED this experience!!! There is a height restriction for the zip-line course of 63 obstacles/stations (as of 2/1/16) HOWEVER there is a really long and double-decked 'net' course for children not tall enough. The 7, 6 & 4 year old children LOVED playing pirates and racing in it. There is also a mini-golf course. The fees were very reasonable. Mangofil takes pride and adheres to very stringent safety policies & standards. Running water and flushing toilets too. This is a place for active types as there is a walk up a hill to the main entrance and definitely physical if you participate in anything other than the mini-golf.
From the Port, we found the taxis to be expensive but if you go to the white van sitting under the "Trois-Ilets" sign (if your back is to the ship, it will be after the last vendor tent). The white vans do not leave until they are full so if your party is 5 or more, you will more than likely be able to leave right away. It is a 30-40 minute drive to and from the Port and the experience at Mangofil is a minimum of 2 hours. We gave the van driver $20US extra and he dropped other passengers off and came back and waited for us.
Take a lunch and water!! They have water for sale at Mangofil and tons of picnic benches. It was a GREAT experience!

Musee de la Pagerie

Empress Josephine, Napoleon's wife, was born and raised at this plantation home.

Reviewed By Film G - Aurora

The museum consists of a new reception area with OK toilets, the ruined foundation of the main plantation house, and the kitchen, which has A/C and several rather uninteresting exhibits of the Empress and Napoleon. Tours in French and English are available — mostly French. There is also the remains of a sugar factory. In all, go only if you’re Really Interested in this type of history. 30 minutes is all you need.

Ranch Jack

This was the best horseback riding experience! First, the family could not have been more helpful, friendly, and they clearly love their horses. There was a miscommunication and they were not expecting us but quickly regrouped and made it possible for us to ride. They picked horses that perfectly matched our riding skills. We had to actively participate in tacking and they shared a bit of insight into each horse's personality. Then we headed out. The views are breath taking. The riding was great with opportunity to trot and gallop. We usually ride western and this is English style but with a little practice we were enjoying the entire ride. A stop midway for refreshment was very appreciated! Riding through fields, trails, and up and down some rugged terrain. If you are even considering riding DO IT and do it at Jacks. Wonderful owners, well cared for horses, and interesting active riding.

Through photographs and documents the role of sugar cane in the development of the island is documented. It could have been named the Museum of Slavery. Issues of prior colonialism and slavery in Martinique and Guadeloupe have not be resolved .

A great stop in Trois Ilets to visit. Beautiful church with tributes to Empress Josephine who was baptized here. Here parents were also married in this church and her mother is buried in this church. Historical signs and monuments are accessible to everyone in the church to browse. Across from the church is a local market with fresh fruits and vegetables sold by local merchants. Also found across from the church is a monument to those lost in war.

Pointe de la Vatable

Recreational park on the waterfront, featuring picnic areas and jogging trails through scenic groves.

Reviewed By SZ - Covington, KY

It is a pleasant little park if you happen to want to walk around a bit or picnic but certainly not worth a special trip. The same vistas can be seen from several sites. The sign is rather tiny and easy to miss from the road.
