.....in the middle of nowhere as far as Sjælland goes.... This is a private collection of the most amazing variety of mostly WW2-related memorabilia. A bit heavy on the handguns it puts together very well curated small displays of WW2 scenes. The private owner apparently collected these over many decades, and turned it into a true little gem if you like a good war museum. Well worth visiting and beats a few other attractions in the area hands down!

The royal burial church of Denmark and a UNESCO world heritage site. Experience a magnificent church and an architectural masterpiece. 1000 Years of Danish history are gathered here under beautifully decorated vaults and in dark crypts. Here 39 kings and queens of Dnemark lie buried. Roskilde Cathedral is just 20 minutes away by train from Copenhagen central station.
Unfortunately I arrived pretty late and had to rush through the Cathedral. Plan enough time to visit, it's huge. Here are many informative panels (English and Danish) which give you an insight of the cathedral's and Denmark's history. A souvenir guide is included in the entry fee.

The park attached to the castle is dotted with monuments to important Danish people. The tomb of Countess Danner is situated on the grounds as well. The park is bordered with a forest and is a nice place to walk or have a picnic.

Lejre Land of Legends (Sagnlandet Lejre) is an atmospheric and exciting tourist attraction for the whole family. 10.000 years of Danish history brought to life. Houses and settings from the Iron Age, Stone Age, Viking Age and 19th century, historic workshops and domestic animals, located in the beautiful historic landscape near Roskilde.
Lejre Sagnlandet is an interesting place. It clearly has the thing about getting in touch with your history, also by families volunteering to live there in the ancient ways during their summer holidays (and being looked at by visitors). But on my second visit in so many years I am slowly warming to it. You need to take it in its special way. Yes, it is in many ways a bit weird, but it also makes a very good effort at recreating the feeling of how people like vikings and medieval country folk lived in Denmark. And if you time it right there is lots of fun for kids - my son did the 'Krigertraining' (warrior training) this year with a bunch of slightly mad viking impersonators and it was so much fun for him. So I recommend checking the web page, see what's on, and then go - unless you like wandering through very few old settlements with people going about their ways without further explanations or information.....

We stopped by here because it is the family church generations ago. Such a peaceful spot in the Danish countryside. The church was open and we looked around inside as well as the very kept up grounds. It is worth a stop to see the care and history of this church.

Warships await you at the Viking Ship Museum. Don't worry, they won't open fire. This museum is dedicated to education about boat building, archaeology and Viking life. It's a favorite among kids, and visitors of all ages can take to the water in traditional vessels. Open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. seven days a week, until 5 p.m. in summer months.
We took the train from Copenhagen (which was very easy and reasonably priced.) We started with the museum, the short movie was interesting and was shown in several languages. The Viking ships were interesting and the presentation was lovely, right on the shore of the lake. When you cross the bridge to the hands-on experiences, there is plenty to keep the whole family entertained. I recommend booking the Viking boat ride early, as we missed out even though it was not too crowded. The restaurant is good, healthy options for reasonable prices. This could be a full day of entertainment, but we were able to see everything in about 4 hours. We enjoyed our Viking day.

Situated in the countryside, the palace is a beautiful building sitting on beautifully landscaped grounds. It was interesting to see the displays on how King Frederik VII and his queen lived while visiting this vacation home. If you plan to take the bus be sure to check the times the bus returns. There are not as many buses as in the city.
