Depending on the weather you may want to bring a picnic lunch and nourish yourself before you begin this extraordinary experience of the old and new. Climb up the Shaw Turret where we commemorated all Black Loyalist communities as you overlook Birchtown Bay. Or enter into the Centre's Lindsey Gallery and dive into the multimedia presentation of the Black Loyalist journey from Africa to the US then to Nova Scotia and back to Africa. Explore the virtual copy of the Carlton's Book of Negroes and search for your ancestor who may have experienced part of this incredible journey. Also explore our amazing archaeological pit which embodies this extraordinary narrative of the past and present. Have fun examining the archaeological artifacts excavated here in Birchtown. Before you leave us please take the time to create a virtual quilt square that will tell us about your experience and how this story has impacted you and what you have learned. Please continue to explore our site and visit our historical buildings where you can view our Bunce Island exhibit and movie, the National Historic Monument that commemorated the 1783 Black Loyalist Landings of Nova Scotia, explore our Heritage Trail and visit the Pit House. Be prepared to spend some time with us.
Black loyalists were free or enslaved Africans who agreed to work for the British during the Revolutionary War in exchange for freedom and a piece of land in NS. For the most part, their dreams of a better life were not realized. Thoughtful interactive displays go back in time and bring you up to modern day. The digital Book of Negroes allows one to search for ancestors. Ask the guides to take you up to the schoolhouse, where you will find more information on the history and use of the school until fairly reccently. There's a short walking trail. The highlight is a "pit house," which is exactly what it sounds like -- a log structure covering a 3-foot deep pit, where black loyalist families weathered the harsh Canadian winter.

Quaint workshop full of boat building material and memorabilia. We could hear the hammering and vacuuming coming from the loft and assumed they were open - turns out opening day is June 1st!
Thank you so much for letting us stay to take a few pictures. We appreciated your time and enjoyed hearing a brief history on the dory. Would love to see some photos of the completed Canada 150 boat.

Thank you for taking the time to review Coastal Queens Place. How did you hear about us?

Took the 2 pm afternoon tour which returns shortly after 5. Cost is $35. Nice to be on the water. Comfortable boat. No real high point to see on this tour but a variety of physical human and historical features were pointed out and explained. Boat crew was very approachable and friendly.

Shelburne museum is the worst of the 3 museums in Shelburne.Save some money and just visit the other two attractions in the area. There was very little to see in this museum.I was very disappointed with what I saw here.I will not be going back to this attraction when I go back to Shelburne.I would go to the house and the dory shop tho.

Candlebox Kayaking specializes in sea kayak tours and sea kayak instruction. Looking for a relaxing sea kayak tour to enjoy with friends or family? We do that. Looking to experience the excitement of learning how to surf a sea kayak at a beach or in tidal currents? We do that too. We also specialize in multi-day kayak tours of the Tusket Islands and Lobster Bay.
We went out twice with Matt and had a wonderful experience each time. He is very knowledgeable about the area and a terrific guide and teacher. We saw seals and bald eagles and incredibly beautiful scenery. Matt has an excellent sense of humor but also makes sure everyone feels safe and comfortable.

The cost of this museum was included in our Nova Scotia Museum Pass. We were the only visitors there on a Saturday afternoon. The guide that took us around the house was fantastic! She provided an incredible amount of very interesting information. She really made this an Excellent experience for us. I would say it probably would not have been as interesting without her wealth of knowledge. She really made this museum worthy of a visit! Sure wish I knew her name to give her the credit she deserves!

A sunny day in November so we went for a walk out to the lighthouse. Always fun checking out a spot we haven't seen before. If you have the time it is worth the walk.
