Tiger Leaping Gorge high trek is all in one: stunning views, rural nature, Waterfalls, goats, eagles, forest and stones, wind and sun... But the climb is long and difficult and the descent is narrow. It needs two days for medium hiker. We did it at winter, not many people on road, dry, sunny afternoon and cold night. Good hiking shoes are required!

The biggest monastery in Shangri-La.

Already ridiculously restrictive (boardwalks and cameras), two of the three stopping points were closed on the day we visited. It is basically a shuffle from start to finish and it takes a lot of dodging to get around the Chinese selfies and posing! Distracting from the beautiful surroundings - but you can't get out and enjoy anyway. I know my Western perspective is biased- but this is not the enjoyable National Park experience of the US.

It's one of the few spots in China for which you don't have to pay entrance fee :) its in the middle of the town so you will come by eventually. When entering the temple itself you have to buy incense apparently, which we refused (so we couldn't go round) which I never understood. There is also a praying wheel which is good fun.

China is great with view but this National Park boast even greater view with high land and low land. You may ride the bus which go fast and prepare yourself not to throw up but it saves time to see all major things here. If you have extra time, try to take a walk here but it may cost your breath. Getting here you must switch to their Green bus and get inside so prepare your stuffs. Afterwards you also need to catch that green bus to go back to parking zone. Watch the time as you may spend some time in this huge place with all the riding/walking and pictures, if it's too late you may find hard to get the ride back to your base station and it will be a long queue. Hope they work better with the bus and maintain the shuttle service instead of all the bus waiting for more people than all the bus moved. There is also some private car to take you to parking zone with a fee. After all, vey much worth to visit. Need to go back here again, this place is hugely awesome. Been here on July 2014 actually.

About an hour and a half's walk around this lake on a wooden board-walk. It's a well-managed park and just beautiful, I imagine, in every season. Flowers, animals, amazing trees......definitely worth a visit.

Lake is nice, surounded by Mountains. Water level varies during the year and sometimes is a bit low and then there are grasslands everywhere - you can walk there but be readdy to get messy. That is still ok.
The worst thing are those enetrprising chinese who are collecting quite a lot of monney for parking and leting you go to the lake when meanwhile you can drive few kilometers further and go to the lake for free - don´t get scammed because if you take a taxi or cab in Shangri-la, driver will probably take you there and get his part of comission.

We got there with bus line 3, which gets to the temple, but right before we got there a soldier took us off the bus (only the non chinese tourists) and demanded a 115 yuan fee for the entrance and for the special bus (bus #3 which we paid for! Gets to the same place the Chinese tourists weren't requested to pay another dime!) We said we don't want a special bus and we'll walk the 3 km to the next station! Then they stopped us again saying you can't enter by walking!
115 yuan to get into a budhist monastery, isn't that against their own belief???
The temple is OK...

White Water (Baishui) Terraces is the highlight of my Shangri-la tour. From a distance, it looks like Pamukkale in Turkey on a small scale. It takes about 2-1/2-3 hours drive from the old town.
The local government is building many artificial terraces to draw more tourists to the attraction. I am therefore glad to visit here before the artificial terraces are completed. The entrance fee is RMB30 right now. But I am sure there will be a steep hike in entrance fee after completion of construction works.
A lot of local residents use different approaches to get a few dollars (or a few hundred dollars) out of your pockets – horse riding, incense for worshipping and photo-taking etc. At times they could be very pushy and despicable. A restaurant even used some unethical business practices to rip off tourists. They asked us to pay RMB600 for a free range chicken. I guess the chicken must be gold-plated to be worthy of the price. Another group of tourists was charged more than the price of some dishes the restaurant originally quoted them.
The toilet at the restaurant was appalling - full of faeces. For what’s worth, the local government is now building a brand new toilet at the site. Until the toilet is open for tourists, however, I suggest that you consume as little water as you could before heading to White Water Terraces.
