Nature is what brings you, but the island has undeniably its history with the war when there were around 600 Germans placed there. This bunker was part of the Atlantic defence wall. Interesting for children to see and to learn how crazy actually all this was. Just around the corner is the 'Vredenhof' which is more impressive, as it stands for something as it radiates respect for humans and love for each other, no matter our origins.

Imagine a teacher of biology with a fascination for shells..... next to his house there is an annex with many displays: Shells that his family has found over the past decades. He travels all over the world to look for them! Go and see for yourselves and you will walk the Beaches with different eyes!
tip: buy one, or more, of his booklets on local birds, butterflies and plants. They are "dummy" proof! ;)

There are two lighthouses: one answer white one and one an older reddish one set among the dunes. The new one is about a ten minute walk from the center and the older one maybe 25.

We have been coming to Schiermonnikoog since we were kids and never been to the far east of the island, so today we went! It cost €13 per person and you leave in a carriage behind a tractor from the villlage to the beach and then all along the beach to the east side of the island at low tide. You can walk around for about half an hour but there is not a lot of variety in scenery. The seals were a long way away on a sandbank and it was hard to take decent photos of the seals. We would have liked a stop or two on the way to enjoy the scenery and take some photos.

After a schipwreck in 1863 when 9 sailers washed up the beach of Schiermonninkoog a start was made with Vredenhof, a cementary ony for victoms of the sea and the war. It now has the remainders of over 100 sailers and soldiers mostly from te first and second World War. Coming from Franche, Germany, United Kingdom, Poland, New Zealand, Australia and Canada, these people have found their resting place here thanks to the people of the island. Its peaceful location in the dunes, surrounded by trees makes Vredenhof a very special place to stand still and commemorate the loss of lives.

Probably the best beach of all of the Wadden Islands, since it is often very quiet. Hire a bike at the ferry, bike a kilometres east, visit restaurant Marlijn before or after you walk a few miles on this lovely broad beach.

We love this island and been there several times. Only cars for the inhabitants so it is quite here. Only people who love nature and like to walk or cycle. There is one village, in summervacation a busy pl,ace. When you are outside of the village it is quite en peaceful. Beautiful dunes and jills. The Beaches are very wide. Very friendly islanders.

Top avond, top sfeer. Echt een must see and do.
