Playa Meron

Reviewed By Cana1Toronto - Toronto

Several kilometers of beautiful Beaches, and we chose this one as it was the larger of the Beaches and we had stopped in town for the afternoon. The water was warm, the sand is very clean, fine, easy to talk along and the beach has toilets, showers, These are the Beaches in the area: Playa El Meron, Playa El Rosal / Tostadero, Playa La Gerra, Playa de Oyambre. This was a very relaxing pleasant stop along our journey where we enjoyed lunch at a neat restaurant, close to the water off the main road in town, before we drove onto our next destination. Very relaxing.

We were staying at camping Oyambre which is a short walk from this glorious beach. There is good surf. To the right of the golf club where the river meets the sea there is another lovely big sandy beach where dogs are allowed on. The Camino passes by the beach.

La Maza Bridge

Reviewed By BennyMalaga - Malaga, Spain

The Puente de la Maza is an important feat of medieval engineering that was started in the 15th century. It was constructed with stone over an older bridge made of wood. The wooden bridge had been constructed in the 6th century. It is a long bridge with a length more than 500 meters and had 32 arches. It was considered one of the longest Bridges at that time in Spain. It goes over the San Vicente Ria. The construction took place during the reign of Carlos III. There have been several reconstructions and today there are 28 arches. During fiestas it is used for setting off fireworks.

Castillo del Rey

Reviewed By BennyMalaga - Malaga, Spain

The Castillo delRey was constructed in 1210 and is one of the best examples of defensive architecture in the area. This was after Alfonso VIII recognized the town. Before that the Asturian King Alfonso I repopulated the town. The Kings of Castille kept ownership of the castle until 1453, when Juan II allowed the Procurator General to be in charge of it. The castle has a rectangular shape and the tall tower has a pentagonal shape. The city walls started from this castle and some parts of the wall have doorways that the pilgrims to the Camino de Santiago used. The castle has been renovated and now holds cultural Exhibitions. There is a permanent exhibition of the history and nature of San Vicente, with original historical documents and other exhibits.

Iglesia de Santa Maria de Los Angeles

Reviewed By Michael K - London, United Kingdom

It is well worth walking up the hill to the highest part of the village to visit this lovely church. From the west end there are fine views. I found this a really satisfying building to visit. It comes from the late Norman/Early Gothic period. Essentially it is a large hall with a series of solid stone columns and arches, no clear windows, no clerestory and with three typically Spanish luxurious Baroque altarpieces at the east end. The floor is composed of massive wooden blocks, the like of which I have never seen before. The pulpit is strangely missing from the top of its staircase. A side-chapel contains the tomb of the Inquisitor, Antonio del Corro, and is more attractive than the tomb of an Inquisitor has any right to be! Admission is only €1.50. Gentle recorded music was playing and the whole experience was most calming and satisfying. I hope it receives more visitors than when we were there.

Santuario de la Barquera

Reviewed By RICKY1494 - Tarragona, Spain
