This is a lovely structure in the center of the city and the burial site of Oscar Romero, a prominent Roman Catholic priest and archbishop of El Salvador in the 1960's and 1970's. He spoke out against human rights and begged the military to stop killing civilians. He clashed with the local government and Catholic Church. He was shot in 1980 while celebrating mass. (Located in the basement of the church). There was an art display, by children, of his likeness. The church is plain but interesting.

Inside this building it is the first civil argentinian flag, a person in the hall explains you the history of this flag, which is related to the independence of Argentina from Spain, it is not the flag used for the battles, but the flag given by Belgrano to the Jujuy people.

We walked 4 blocks east from our Jujuy Palace Hotel. After paying 50 Ap each, we self toured the 9 rooms and 2 courtyards. The 1st room had a collection of tall mortars and pestles of indigenous people and a display of the cowhide helmets they made for the early Spanish soldiers. Following rooms displayed Jesuit Mission artifacts, colonial goods like the 19th century hand painted fan, plated in gold and mother of pearl, independence battle flags, paintings of significant leaders, and tributes to General Lavalle and his killing in 1841.
This is a good museum for provincial background.

Manuel Belgrano started life as a lawyer and economist, bécame a politician, and finally a General whose main campaigns were fought in the far North of what is now Argentina. He is credited with creating the design for the country’s flag and is much revered for his overall contribution to South American Independence. We stopped for an extended break in this handsome square on the way back to Salta from Humahuaca on a bus tour. It gave us plenty of time to admire the large garden that fills its center, heavily planted with trees, shrubs and flowers that almost obscure the magnificent equestrian statue of the hero after whom it is named, seen here proudly carrying the flag to which he gave birth. One side of the square is flanked by the elegantly pretty State Legislature in front of which stand an imposing Fountain. Most of the surrounding buildings are representative of the better style of Hispano-South American architecture, and it is a delightful spot in which to rest and sip a coffee in the open air.

This is not a tourist destination, most of the coaches stops in Humauaca and then go back to Jujuy or Salta. But not continuing on RN9 to Tres Cruces you would miss one of the most spectacular view in the region. It is on route 9 about 60km from Humahuaca, The road is very good and steadily climb to Tres Cruces, a small town/village with very little to do.
The stunning surprise are the Mountains shape, the colours and the vastness of the view.
It is very different from the Quebrada of Humauaca that you travel across to get to Humauaca, definitely worth the longer drive and the extra couple of hours.
If you get there in the early afternoon, you still have time to get back to Salta for dinner.
