Although our hotel promised bicycles they didn't have any so sent us here. We were well looked after (being novices) and were supplied with simple but comfortable cycles within the hour. The price of 38 Euros for two for two days seemed a very good deal considering how popular the island is in Europe.

You get a sense of history from the top of the church tower- from the work of vauban and his star shaped defensive bastions to a time when the musketeers were very much part of the history of the area. The stairs are stone to begin with then wooden and it's narrow and you can bash your head and you go past the bell- I went past as it struck- schoolboy error. Well worth the couple of euros entry.

This must be one of the most photographed spots in western France. As you drive by you cannot ignore the areas of brilliantly coloured poppies with the ruined abbey as a back drop. If you walk into the poppies it can be quite a psychedelic experience - takes you back...

We live with the sun and the sand ! It's time to drink ? You'll take a mojito or a beer time to lunch? Great view in front of the sea time to have fun? Little trip in jet ski or donuts behind a boat

The salt water pool on the beach was a relaxing treat after a long journey, and the indoor facilities set us up the following morning for the next leg of our journey.

We cycled around the area and popped into St Martins late morning in July. It was heaving with day trippers that had taken the boat from La Rochelle. Far too busy, but when we returned later in the afternoon, peace had been restored and the gorgeous back streets and harbour area could be explored in peace.
The place to be seen.

Lovely market with a good range of yummy produce & welcoming atmosphere. We picked up some lovely bread, goat's cheese, saucisson & raspberries for a picnic on the beach and enjoyed chatting with the stall holders who were very kind & friendly and helped us practice our terrible French :)

Jean Phillip runs the shop and is fantastic. Known him for a while now and always has a brilliant way of dealing with people. Very nice, welcoming and we are always in an out quickly with new bikes. Bikes are fantastic, highly recommended.

Really loved the jam in this place - they have a tasting tray which helps you narrow down your choices - at these prices you cant buy them all 430g = 9.70 euros = approx £7.00 !! However, customer service is restricted - if there isn't a taster for the one you are interested in - too bad. And please don't look through the window so helpfully placed to see the production... the lady will close the blinds on you! Totally bizarre, but maybe she was having a bad day. Maybe better to buy from one of the distributors on the island.
