While historians still debate as to whether the "Panay" written on early documents on Philippine history refers to the present-day town of Pan-ay or to Panay Island in general, a visit to the place is still worth-doing because of the beauty of the structure of the old church and convent in there.
The Church of Santa Monica (also known as the Panay Church) is certainly one of the oldest Christian churches in the Philippines. The parish itself, according to a marker on one of its walls, was founded in 1581. There is a spacious convent sala upstairs that gives you a nice view both of the church right across the convent and of the square in front of the church. There is also a small museum, but this needs a lot of renovation.
As to the church, you can visit the interior of the building and admire its "retablos" full of carved wooden statues of the first Augustinian saints. Be sure to go up its belfry to see some of the oldest and biggest bells in the country. The climb is quite challenging, so take your time in going up. No rush. From the top, you'll have a wonderful view of the town and its surroundings. Have yourself accompanied by one of the guides provided by the church in order to appreciate more the history and beauty of the place.
The town of Pan-ay is located some 120 kms away from Iloilo City. It would take you around three hours to reach the place by car. It is in Capiz Province. It would be much closer if you come from Roxas City (14 kms away), which has its own airport. Along the way from Iloilo City you may stop by one of the small towns in the area (like Pototan, Dingle, Duenas, and Passi) and visit other old churches, which the island of Iloilo is famous for.

It was our last day in Roxas City and decided to take an early morning dip - the water was nice and cool. The beach is black sand. There were bottom - feeders along the shoreline which attested to its cleanliness. Problem is there are garbage scattered everywhere. I hope hotel or resort management do something about this concern.

We took the tricycle going there. For visitors like us the regular rate per adult is 8pesos kids are free. The tricycle can transport as much as 8persons. The museum is just beside the city hall and walking distance to the old Spanish bridge. Entrance is free. The museum is well organized and has good amount of historical displays. Make sure to read the signs to further enjoy the museum experience. They sell souvenirs like small capiz chimes at 180pesos, key chains and ref magnets for 50pesos and bracelets.

It is not a significant peace of architecture. It is good for religious practice, wedding, christening ,..etc or as a reference for the city maps. But not an architectural landmark.

This was our second visit to Robinsons Place Roxas. It was opened in February 2014, in a new development called Pueblo de Panay. It is very clean, well lighted and air conditioned. There are 2 levels, easily accessed by escalators. This visit I was especially impressed by the Robinson Handy-Man store (2nd floor). They had an amazing selection of tools, accessories and bathroom fixtures. We purchased a variety of Biscocho Haus pastries from a vendor on the 1st floor. They had a special exhibit of flowering plants (for sale) in the atrium. It was exciting being there.

The bridge spans the Panay River. Looks very colonial on the adjacent riverbank with the municipal buildings and the Cathedral. Nice area on the riverside to sit and watch the world go by.
There is another newer bridge further down river, and both Bridges now are one way to traffic. Notwithstanding, take a walk and you can do it in either direction. Architecturally and aesthetically pleasing . The heart of the city.

Just 15-20 minutes away from the municipality of Roxas City, you can experience a relaxing and sumptuous seafood lunch while riding a boat tour of the Palina River in Cagay. You can appreciate a landscape of mangroves and fishponds as well as a humbling view of the locals' daily living with just an hour of boat ride going to a temporary stop in the heart of the river (it takes less time to go back to the station). For a city girl like me, a plus side is the clean and fresh air! Relaxation is at its finest and you can just sit (and maybe get a massage) while marveling at God's creations.
The crew of locals in the boat ride were very accommodating. The food was really great! Reservations prior the tour is highly recommended. This is comparable to the river tour in Bohol, but this experience is really one-of-a-kind for me because of its untouched beauty and serene ambiance.

This is another promising attraction - boat ride passing by thick mangroves and they also offer lunch. We were unable to try this as our guide just took us there to merely introduce this as another attraction of roxas city.

This newly. Built monument was finished in January , 2015 and it was built by a man who had a wish and vision to built an image for the Christ in this area as it really had a great views.
It is considered as the tallest and highest Jesus Christ status in Asia measured as 132 feet tall. The area is in the highest point I guess in roxas and the way leading to it is a rough road ramp up of gravels which was very hard to climb it up with the tricycle, we were 3 persons and the driver and since the driver and one of us was quite big , we had to go out me and my big friend from the tricycle so it can climb some rough parts.
Up there there is an open church, restaurant and magnificent views.
Yes the views up there are awesome , I was. It fascinates at all with the statues as it is not impressive for me, what was impressive is the view for the city, sea, fisheries and the mountain/rice terraces in the back of the shrine, it is a really very nice views that's why I would consider it as a look tops and viewpoint. I guess it is a must see place to witness the beauty of roxas other than being only famous as the capital of seafood of the Philippines.
