Biblioteca Da Floresta

I think by the fact that this library is currently the #3 attraction in Rio Branco sums up the city quite well. I just wanted to find some wifi to contact a friend, and after the tourist information ladies looked entirely bemused by the presence of a gringo in their city, they pointed me in the direction of the library.
Once there, the helpful staff attempted to take my life story in registering me for the library, which took a fair while. However, the facilities were good, with plenty of free computers to use, a large quiet study area, mini cafe and, of course, plenty of books. Appeared to be a hotspot for the youth of Rio Branco...

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the beautiful Palacio Rio Branco museum, learning a lot about the region and the capital of Acre. Business brought me to Acre, and, from speaking with other Brazilians, I'd not found anyone who had ever visited this fascinating, charming region of the country. Very surprising, since I mention in my hotel review that I enjoyed hospitality and service that I've found nowhere else in Brazil thus far. The former Governor's Palace is now a great museum- and an art deco lover's dream. We enjoyed a tour with a young woman who made a great effort to explain the exhibit in English, but regardless of her proficiency, one needn't know Portuguese to appreciate the beautiful designs and modern presentation of the rich culture found in this region of Brazil. The history of the state of Acre, the many indigenous tribes in the region, and the amazing design of this art-deco masterpiece of a building needed no tour-guide, as their images were on full display. An impressive and beautifully-presented museum in a city which was a pleasure to visit. What a warm welcome, this museum.

Parque Ambiental Chico Mendes

The park is a few kms in the city's suburbia and its free to visit. They have a small memorial about Chico Mendes, a man responsible for a region revolution in the 80's and 90's. The memorial is very simple, with information without a chronologic order. The animals/zoo part of the park is really good and you can see several amazonian species from leopards to monkeys, colorful birds and snakes. They could do better creating more spaces for animals and have a butterfly area, and one for dragonflies. Also it would be great to have information about plants. When I went to get the map of the park the administrator told me that a few things in the park were shut such as the viewing point, what is a must see apparently. Also she didn't recommend as a girl alone to do the track that goes around the park what tell me that is not a safe place. I didn't feel any dangers but better not to risk. its a park worth visiting for sure, and I hope they improve.

Praca da Revolucao

In contrast to the Spanish-layout plazas common in Latin America, this plaza follows more the Portuguese structure and architectural form than the emphasis on government, church and public buildings of Spain focus. You get a good feel for the ornate Neo-Moorish style of the Portuguese by simply staring at the broad designs on the tile floor that give the entire plaza a projection of a careful work of art.

The walkway around the river is very charming. There are loads of art deco houses recently re-painted all colorful, they are now restaurants and bars that open for the evenings on the weekends. Around the gigantic region flag, surrounded by Christmas lights, there are built huts with typical food. they are clean and the food is really good. The bars on the boraders of the river play live music and it is a great Saturday afternoon/ evening activity. They also have a very small craft's market. ts a popular location for people in the city to hang around during weekends, it's a great place to have a local feeling.
