Portumna (Irish: Port Omna - meaning 'the landing place of the oak') is a market town in the south-east of County Galway, Ireland, on the border with and linked by a bridge to County Tipperary. The town is located to the west of the point where the River Shannon enters Lough Derg. This historic crossing point over the River Shannon between counties Tipperary and Galway has a long history of bridges and ferry crossings. On the south-western edge of the town lie Portumna Castle and Portumna forest park.

The Workhouse Tourism Centre is sooo worth visiting. The place was eerily quiet when we visited, as it was off-season, but the welcome we got was the warmest in all our trip. The guide Clare was lovely and told the history of the centre so well. The manager, Steven?, insisted we came in for tea afterwards and spent an hour explaining the history of the region and telling us the best places to go around the place. There's a lot that needs to be done in the complex but they're working on a little museum at the moment so I'll be back! :-)

What remains of the House and Gardens are lovely. The house itself was pretty much destroyed by fire in 1826, and was never again lived in. It is presently being restored, and parts of the first and second floors are open for visitors. There are lots of panels detailing the biographies and histories of various resident nobility, including "Hugh the Miser" who was known as an eccentric recluse, and not surprisingly, left no descendants. I loved the panel describing the hierarchy of 18th and 19th century servants. I actually got lost in the Willow Maze. The "Ha Ha" Wall was an interesting landscape feature, and nicely illustrates a transitional feature from castle to manor house. In season, visitors are offered an apple grown on the grounds as they're leaving.

Park on the shores of Lough Derg.
There are some beautiful walks here, of different lengths/terrains so it suits everyone. (Though I did see a little girl of about 2 telling her grandparents she had been walking 'twenty-eleven' hours - so perhaps not great for the very young!
I didn't see any wildlife, unless you count insects and bees. But I did hear something bigger rustling in the bushes a couple of times.
The only negative was the viewing point at the lakeside. It needs to either be raised or the shrubs in front of it trimmed, as there wasn't much of a view.
NOTE: there are toilet facilities in the car park - very useful!

My Wife and I had lunch at Potumna Golf Club - today 15th. September 2016- and it was excellent. My Wife had the Forest Special ( 2 thin Beef steaks ) and I had Roast beef, consisting of 2 generous slices of Beef + Vegetables, chips and boiled jacket potatoes. It was a delicious meal and we were served by Michelle who was the epitome of friendliness and efficiency. The door of the kitchen opened and the Chef said hello - it would only happen in Ireland of the Welcomes. Many thanks Michelle.
