What can you say about a CWGC cemetery? Row upon row of heroes. On the day we visited a previously unknown soldier received his named headstone, thanks to the efforts of many but in particular a Dutch researcher. Private Loney, is now a named hero. Well done Ginger.

Airborne Museum Hartenstein

Reviewed By Hendrik_NL - Rotterdam, The Netherlands

The museum is justly located in villa "Hartenstein", where the headquarters were of the paratroops who landed here in the autumn of 1944 for operation Market, the freeing of the route for the allied forces the the industrial Ruhr area. This museum presents a comprehensive and lucid overview of the operation and why it failed.(Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery kept insisting that the operation was 90 % successful, but of course due to that remaining 10 %, occupying the Rhine bridge in Arnhem, the complete operation Market Garden failed). It is a very interesting museum, telling the story clearly. In the third basement, you can experience live what it was to be in Arnhem in September 1944. An almost mandatory visit for everyone who wants to understand this part of history. Entrance for a fee, free entrance with the annual Dutch museum pass. Free parking on site. Restaurant Hartenstein close to the parking lot.

If your dog is in for a swim, if you are off for a stroll. You can drop by the teahouse run by metally disabled, you can walk thorugh the fields and think of your sins or pass through the long and winding hedge if you are in a romantic mood. What a place to be

NL-Xperience

As a private guide in Amsterdam and several other locations in the Netherlands. I design a day according to the available time and interests of my guests: history, architecture, art, the Dutch way of life and gastronomy. I am enthusiastic, well informed and service-minded. If needed I have a car with space for 5 passengers. From 6 hours tours up to multiple day tours.

We took the ‘Gastronomical Tour’ with Lut and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
The tour has an unusual format: walk for an hour or so, eat a starter in a restaurant, walk for another hour or so, eat a main-course in a second restaurant, walk for a further hour or so, eat a dessert in a third restaurant. An interesting way to learn about the history of Arnhem and also to sample to culinary delights of the city.
Lut is a friendly, polite and knowledgeable host. She related the history of Arnhem in an informative and interesting way and chose restaurants with a good variety of reasonably-priced dishes to choose from. The highlight of the tour was the view from the top of the Eusebius Church, where we could see over the entire city of Arnhem and beyond.
An interesting experience and one that we would recommend to anyone that wants to learn about the history of Arnhem in a relaxed and enjoyable manner.
