Disappointing that everything was closed - especially as we'd walked for 2 hours to get here, but really the highlight was the wonderful view and the birds

800 years of Swedish history are on display at this beautiful castle.
The remains of this castle have been excellently preserved after the ravages of time, wars and fire. There are great views over the town. It contains an excellent museum that tells the story of the castle (that is a chapter of the history of the region and, indeed, the country). The museum is very well curated with explanations in English as well as a free audio guide that you can download to your smartphone. Note that the castle is only 15 minutes' walk (along a nature trail) from the Royal Summer Palace at Solliden.

Interesting nature center, even for non-birdwatchers. There are some nice souvenirs you can buy, and help the center and its animals. There is information about the work carried on in the area.

The trip out there is nice.
Its a special nature and you have to walk the last distance from the parking place. When you are there you can have a walk around the area and look at the house where people were living before. There are a smal place to buy ice-cream and coffee. Runed by the daughter to the last lighthouse keeper.

This royal white castle for one's thoughts back to the last century and a romantic dream of the Mediterranean and Italian culture. The small beautiful accompanying park is, as usual, typical Swedish manners, a mixture between, French, English and Italian. And if you are lucky you can get a glimpse of the royal family.

The museum itself is a gem but the modern art exhibited is just ridiculously uninteresting especially that of the artist in the basement. Interesting sculptures on the first floor.

Neptuni åkrar is a wonder of the nature. By the sea a 200m wide shingle field spreads out a couple of kilometers. The shingles, lots of smooth rocks, were deposited by the retracting ice sheet during the last ice age sometime between 15000 and 10000 years ago. These fields have created its own micro climate with lots of flowers. There are hiking trails along the field.
Following the fields by the sea is fantastic limestone flat rock formations with a horizontal flat surface extending into the sea. Here you can watch the small fish in the limestone cracks, soak in the sun and then take a dive into the sea.
The area is apparently excellent for snorkeling and diving because of the teeming sea life and limestone formations.
Just adjacent to the stone fields is apparently a viking ship grave, called Forgallaskeppet. I missed that. Next trip!
The time to visit is when the sun is shining and the sea is quite calm.

This is the most beautiful and best preserved fortress in the island. It is open only during high season, but if you are lucky, the doors are open, and you can still visit the fortress (not the museum). I was there in Midsummer, and though it was closed, I could go inside and climb to the walls. Very interesting!

Having spent the day travelling around Southern Öland we had become very attached to the little windmills we saw at every turn and we're delighted when we came across the five at Lerkaka! With care you could look inside and they make such an impressive sight with the blue sky and field if yellow oil seed rape behind them, not to mention the interesting contrast with the five wind turbines in the distance. Our only request is for more information about the history and purpose of the mills. Was it flour production or drainage or both? Well done Öland for preserving so many of these fascinating mills.

its an nice place special if you visit it together with the "Skördefest" the last weekend in September. Last time I very there they had illuminated the whole fort and even the chaptel with big candles.
You could see it on long distance in the dark September night.
