We were driving from Nordeste to Provoacao - the road was under construction - very windy and a bit hair-raising at times, so when we saw what we thought was another viewpoint, we stopped to stretch our legs. So glad we did as we wandered through this multi-level, continuously unfolding garden. It was so quiet, peaceful and beautiful - plenty of places for picnics/barbecues and washroom facilities. The views along the coast were stunning.

The lighthouse is beautiful, but in a most unusual spot....half-way down a sharp cliff area. There is a 'road' from the top to the bottom, however it is only for the very brave and very experienced to drive it. I would recommend walking, but wear comfortable shoes and be ready to sweat as it is 500 meters (down) to get to the lighthouse. Amazing view...but continue down the road. It is 'Lombard Street' on steroids to the bottom. I recommend that you head down the road as you will be rewarded with a beautiful view of a waterfall that you cannot see from any other vantage point. The view looking up at the cliffs are also spectacular. Once you have taken in this magnificence, take a drink and get ready for the l-o-n-g, steep walk up the hill. The views are worth it!

Tronqueira is one of the first restaurants I ate at in Nordeste(and the island). The food is always great and service is pretty good. The prices are good as well. The shark steak is a must try. Also, a nice treat is the bread and cheese with pimento as a starter for everyone.....don't be alarmed when the 2 Euro's is on the bill at the end for it.........it's normal in all of Sao Miguel....besides, its $3 for a loaf of bread, an entire tub of goats cheese and pimento.....wow!!

This is a hidden and poorly advertised spot, but like most of the Gardens and miradouros in the Azores is well-tended and beautiful. It is small compared with some of the well-known Gardens, but well worth a relaxing hour. There is a parking lot off EN1-1A right at its sharpest bend over Ribeira do Guilherme (coordinates 37.833388, -25.155925). There is plenty of parking, and a easy walk down paved trails along the river, past flower Gardens to a restored water mill. To the right is a beautiful waterfall. We only saw one other couple the day we visited. There are gazebos and tables for picnics, but I didn't see any toilet facilities for visitors. Right up the road towards Nordeste is the turnoff to Piscina da Foz da Ribeira do Guilherme, the public pool built where Ribeira do Guilherme reaches the ocean, and a bit further on is the steep road to Farol do Arnel, the very picturesque lighthouse.

This beautiful beach is not hard to find, but involves a trip down a steep, twisty and scary (to some) road, followed by a 10-minute walk along a paved walking path with several sets of stairs. The paved access road leaves EN1-1A just south of the miradouro Ponta da Madrugada. It is not marked by a sign, but is easy to spot (access road coordinates are 37.786818, -25.148842). Bring along refreshments and anything you might need, as there was nothing available there when we visited. Our first visit was in August 2012, and the sand was all on the north side of the sea breaks. This year when we saw it, the sand was back where it was supposed to be, between the sea breaks. This is a breathtakingly beautiful spot, and highly recommended.

The young lady who welcomed us to the centre was very friendly and informative. She showed us through different areas were women were producing the traditional embroidery, lace and woven products (household linens, blankets, tapestry, clothing), answering our questions and translating for us with the artisans. There was a small area of goods for sale, at reasonable prices considering the amount of work that goes into them, and we were happy to be able to purchase a few items. A good place to visit if you are interested in getting a better feel for the daily life of early and current Azoreans.

We stopped in Nordeste as we were touring around the island and followed the brown signs to this reserve, about five minutes' walk from the central church.
We found an open gate with no signage indicating public access. We took it from the only other Trip Advisor review that access was allowed and walked around the manicured Gardens, children's play areas and bird enclosures, seeing no one.
This wasnt really our cup of tra and strongly preferred the small botanical Gardens (see separate review 'Garden of Quinta Do Moinho') just to the north of Nordeste.
Not a particularly good tourist destination and it may be more a facility for locals.
