Crete ACTIVE discover and experience! Canyoning through Kreta's wild, inaccessible gorges, climbing near the beach, via ferrata with breathtaking views, mountaineering, hiking ...
Waterfall abseiling in the beautiful Kourtaliotiko Gorge was a fantastic day out for our family aged from 11 upwards. Lior and Franci the guides are friendly, chatty, patient and knowledgeable. They made us feel safe and gave options for the moe and less adventurous in our group. They also provided a delicious lunch!

Our donkey sanctuary has twenty rescued ex working, abused and abandoned Cretan donkeys. We warmly welcome visitors to learn more of the plight and history of the Cretan donkey.Small children may have a ride and all visitors are encouraged to help with grooming and feed and learn about the care of donkeys. We offer adoptions and fun fund raising days to help raise funds to feed our donkeys....
We visited the Donkey Sanctuary today and I was so pleased we did. We were a few minutes out from visiting hours but I really wanted to make a donation. Having said that I thought we would make the donation and leave (this being a short break for them in a very long day ) but no...we were warmly greeted and engaged in conversation and some information about the gorgeous animals in their care. What a wonderful, selfless thing this family do. You are wonderful.

Decided to go to the red beach with my family and friends.
From Matala you need to "climb" up to the hill, before having the chance to walk down to the see. (Pretty hard for young kids under 6/7 would say).
There are two different ways to reach it, one is slightly easier.
Once on the beach (1/2 hour at least), realized that day unfortunately the sea wasn't so clean, maybe due to the tide. In the afternoon it was better.
If the sea if flat, a small boat can help you go back to Matala beach.
Worth it and expensive the Mojito you can have at the bar.
No food there.
No toilette, in case of need...enjoy open air!!!

I LOVED this shop - its in a tiny village, Kouses, in Crete up in the Mountains.
The employees are friendly and helpful.
This looks like the kind of place Harry Potter may pop into. Rows of glass jars filled with unusual, unknown, familiar and exotic herbs, spices and teas. You are encouraged to open the jars and smell, taste or test what is inside. They will make up packets of any size for you - from 20grs to 2 kgs.
You are offered 2 different herbal teas to try. Outside on a small balcony is an old rustic table and chairs with a great mountain view.

I think I've found my favorite beach on the South Coast. It's far enough to keep the riff-raff away, it's spotless and there's a hike involved to get there. Please leave only footprints and nudists stay in your designated Beaches - I'll be bringing my young daughters with me. Don't take offense - there are designated nudist Beaches and this IS NOT ONE OF THEM.
There were a few people climbing the rocks - everyone was very polite - let's keep it that way!

The ruins of an ancient Minoan palace, popular among tourists.
This place is beautiful; the setting is dramatic, with breathtaking views all around. The Palace itself is almost as large as Knossos and follows a similar plan. It's easy to navigate around by yourself with plenty of information boards, so go on your own and see it at your own pace; a basic guidebook or floor plan will suffice. The excavators have resisted the flights of fancy that have led to the Disneyfication of Knossos, so it feels authentic; the limited restoration that has been done is sensitive and restrained. It's also much less crowded. Go, and let your own imagination run riot.

Everything said about the spaciousness and beautiful setting of this beach is true. However, for beach walkers and waders the beach is quite disappointing. The grainy sand is unusually soft which makes it exhausting to walk along the beach any distance. Upon entering the surf we encountered a short band of pebbles followed by a rocky shelf which made it unpleasant for wading along the beach in the water.
It is fine for sunbathing if the wind is mild.

We did both - Martsalo gorge and Agio Farango gorge and both a quite easy and nice.
We took that gravel road from Odigitria Monastery and drive very slowly because the road was very narrow and rough. It is possible to do with that rented small car but be careful. We haven't reached that parking place because a road was getting worse and worse so we left our car maybe 1.5 km until the parking place and simply walked that distance.
A gorge itself is very easy, short and impresive. Huge cliffs and climbers. Amazing beach and a old church. It was a windy day and not so warm (in the begining of April) so we just walked that gorge, had a break at the beach and went back.

Ancient caves carved into the cliff overlook the beach which was an ancient port. Now it's pretty busy but still nice with loads of tavernas going up into the village which is quite charming. The swimming and snorkelling is very good. It's one of the best arches in the area that's got easy access.. many of the others are far off down dirt tracks that nearly killed my Toyota Yaris
