Porte d'Enfer

Reviewed By Film G - Aurora

Hell's Gate (free English translation) is a pair of high cliffs at the entrance to a long, finger-like inlet that is very calm, and OK for swimming. At the Hell's Gate, there is high surf and waves, as the rough sea hits it. There is an easy path along the inlet, some of which is wheelchair-accessible. Take it. At the entrance to the path there is a reasonably clean toilet. Plus, there's a restaurant there (Chez Coco) which is Highly Recommended. Drive on north and there's a short path to another headland with great views.

Our last stop on a tour of Guadeloupe, would be in the town of Morne-a-l’Eau. As we approached our destination, everyone was amazed to see a cemetery in the shape of an Amphitheater with black and white checkered graves. Now this was an unusual cemetery to say the least. We spent about 15 minutes looking around and taking in this unique place. It is one of those places where you just can’t take enough photos to capture the whole place. At times like this, I wish I had a drone to mount a camera on to be able to capture it all.

Beautiful sand, beautiful water, trees for shade, not so many people... What could be better?
Parking is great BUT the main lot is clay and extremely slippery. Be very careful. Park very close to the path if you can. Or better yet turn left as you come in and park down near the car field. Don't worry, they're all chained (though they sound kind of mad about it sometimes.) Fewer cars, skip the walking past all the folks and just duck through the trees on the little path and you'll find yourself closer to a perfect spot.

A great cultural and historical guided tour with local passionate guides. A place to discover the history of the island. The english speaking tour has to be booked a few days before.

I had seen this house several times through the railings and admired it with its fascinating story of being on its way from Eiffel's metal works to Louisiana. It was therefore a wonderful coincidence to see it was open - and on my birthday too - though the restaurant was closed for a private event later in the day. The mother of the owner is one of the most knowledgable and interesting people I have met in Guadeloupe. Not only does she know the history of the house but she also has an amazing and interesting knowledge of the history of slavery, with lots of books and pictures to back up her knowledge. She has researched the house and local history at the national archives in Paris and is keen to share her researches. The fruit punch was very welcome after walking around the garden and ruins of the sugar factory with its slave quarters and ancient chimney.
If the house is not open, there is a parking space opposite and the view of the house and the Indian monument just inside the main gates is still worth stopping for.
Definitely worth the detour!

If there were a rating above excellent I would cheerfully assign it to Taina. We had limited time and she put together a tour that gave us history, culture and nature. On time pickup; excellent English; comfortable bus. And very friendly; at the end, Taina made a phone call for us (and then showed me how to use my cellphone). Altogether a great experience that I recommend to anyone visiting the island.

If you want to look deeply into the history of the island it is of interest. Furthermore, you are close to the city of la Moule. At first glance it doesn't seem to offer much but it has remained untouched by destruction due to war and weather and tourism has only permeated its outskirts. It is an authentic Caribbean town.
