The island is small. Along the western beach you have some resorts and B&B's. That's it. On the rest of the island there are some rural villages with rubber trees around. Really relaxing!

We bought a half day trip to Boonsung Wreck with Koh Kho Khao Diving - probably the only diving company on the island. The diving shop is run by Nui, a divemaster who does all the preparations and dive guiding himself. This is very different comparing to other Thai diving companies for which you are surrounded by various staff you do not even remember and for whom you are only a name on the list. When we came to the shop, Nui personally explained us the possibilities (have-day, one-day, two-day diving trips) and when we made up our mind, he helped us to choose the suitable equipment to rent.
For the trip itself, a wooden boat similar to the boats transporting people and motorycles to Koh Kho Khao was used, so do not expect much speed and much privacy. But we were supplied water, some cakes, fresh fruit... We were the only customers for the trip! Nui was not very talkative during the boat ride, his English is average (at best), but when we arrived, he explained the dive site layout, basic safety guidelines, signs to use underwater. When diving, he also showed us interesting creatures living on or near the wreck - which was very well possible thanks to the size of our diving group (just us two + Nui).
The dive itself was amazing - we consider it to be the best dive in Thailand, even better than the Similan Islands. The schools of fish were huge and the diversity enormous. Very recommendable.

Bangsak beach is great for long walks especially around sunset, the West facing aspect gives the best opportunity for those who want to experience spectacular Thai sunsets.
There are several restaurants hidden amongst the trees which gives shade from the sun whilst you dine.
Definitely recommend a visit.

This beach stretches for 11km and is totally unspoiled. Beautiful white sand, warm water, very safe swimming with low waves. Plenty of beach restaurants hidden in the trees.
But be aware Thai law (post 1 Feb 18) forbids hotels and restaurants providing beach umbrellas. Bit there is plenty of shade under the trees.

Was told about this site by our hotel manager and decided to go the very same day after hearing about the local tsunami history. The locals were very nice, and welcoming. Paid our respects at the memorial. The views of the beach were amazing, untouched, spoke with locals who were fishing. Local shopkeepers are very friendly too.

A 15 minute taxi ride for around 300 baht from The Sands in Khao Lak we found The White Sand Beach. A picture perfect beach with calm waters and white sand. Its full of hermit crabs which makes much fun for kids and adults as well.
A good selection of 4 restaurants on the beach. We tried both the big one at the "entrance" White Sand Beach which was okay and the Smile Beach Resort which also was okay and the staff here were really nice. The kids loved it.
Take a break here, see the sunset and eat some food right on the beach.

We had a swell time just walking through this day market and stopped to try little delicacy that were available all along the walk through. Again you will only see friendly smiling faces and every merchant trying his or her best to convince you that you will get the best price here. Barter is part of the every day life of the Thais and you should always offer them a fair deal if you think you need to close the sale, this bargaining of goods is done in a very friendly manner, remembering that every one has to come out of it happy and contented,
A good break from all the crowded shopping centers in Bangkok and a nice way to see Thailand from the ground up.

Nice canoe ride down (as the name of the place says) a little amazon. A Thai guide paddles you along the river, scouting out the animals along the way. Our guide liked to place me right underneath all the tree snakes he found, haha!
Nice to see some monkeys in their natural habitat :)
Hot Tip: there's a lot of flying bugs around, DO NOT wear anything sweet smelling, like for example Hawaiian tropic sun screen.. the bugs love that apparently!

Flea Market on Wednesday's afternoon and evening
As stated they had everything available for sale from food already cooked to uncooked fish and meat etc. We had somebody help us pick out a fish and some prawns and we took them back to our hotel and they cooked everything for us.
It was amazing.

We met Jo and his amazing family pet elephant, Tongdee, recently. We had the most amazing experience with Jo and Tongdee. We spent a few hours chatting to Jo re his family and business and he explained so much to us about Tongdee and elephants in general - he knows his stuff. We then swam and washed Tongdee for ages. Jo's family were so hospitable and gave us water, fruit and coconut to refresh us on a very hot and humid day. Tongdee is very well looked after and cared for and looked really happy to both of us. She certainly loved being in the water and playing around with us. We plan on visiting the area again next year and will most definitely be visiting Jo and Tongdee again. Thank you to Jo, his family and Tongdee. We could not recommend this experience high enough. Sean and Jen - Sydney, Australia
