For the past 400 years, Okawachimaya has been an all-pottery, all-the-time producer of ceramics. It's an unspoiled place; the setting is truly beautiful and special. Don't expect to find Starbucks or Duncan Donuts franchises -- thank goodness! Families going back multiple generations have lived there in houses co-located with their kilns and shops. The town was purposely located in a valley ringed by steep Mountains on three sides in order to prevent outsiders from sneaking in and carrying away the potters' techniques and tradecraft. I spent a good four or five hours looking around, taking in the village's beautiful scenery and setting, and shopping.
Many of the ceramics on offer were of a traditional Imari style, but other pieces were innovative and modern designs. Overall the prices were very reasonable for beautiful and distinctive pieces. Some shopping tips: (1) semi-annual pottery fairs take place on April 1-5 and November 1-5 and they offer great bargains; 2) many of the stores accept credit cards; and 3) many of the stores will ship your purchases (domestically for sure, as was my situation, and possibly also overseas).
You can reach O'yama via occasional bus service which stops at the curb of the Imari train station. Ask for help and an English-language brochure at the tourist information booth located on the ground floor.

My wife and I visited Imari as a stop on our trip to Unsen and to see the ceramics when we stumbled on the annual Ton Ten Ton Festival. This is held around October 22 to 24 and is a fighting festival held every year in the city in Saga Prefecture.Beginning at the Imari Shrine, the festival is well known as one of the three great fighting festivals of Japan.
The main streets are all lined with little shops selling all kinds of Japanese food / beverage all which are good value. The main part of the festival takes place by the river and it is advisable to find a good position, either on the bridge upstream of the location or on the opposite side of the river. This part of the festival starts at 4.00 and lasts about an hour. We were able to watch quite a bit of the festival the following day on TV and if you want to see the full festival plan to arrive on Sat leaving on Monday.
We walked around the city briefly on Monday morning - not alloy to see. However what attractions there are seem to close on Mondays.

Good maps and they really try very hard to help, so their little bit of English plus my little bit of Japanse went a long way. Very good japanese snacks for sale, you feel like buying some because they look so good, even if you ( a Westerner) are not sur what the content of the fascinating package is.
Good brochures about transportation, hotels, etc.
Again, it is surprising how well we did, given the language barrier. Amazing, and then, with the info they gave me, I spent a fantastic day.
Great location: just by the bus and train station, and close to downtown.
