Vast grassland on gentle rolling hillocks stretching as far as eyes can see, pristine rivers snaking through virgin coniferous forest, unparalleled starry night sky, this trip had it all. We were a group of friends (6), and went around the northern region of Hulunbuir for 7 days. We hired a driver who doubled as the guide. We went during mid-June, the temperature was around 16-30 degrees, which was quite bearable. Unfortunately the flowers were not in full bloom, we were told that the flowers will cover entire hill slopes later in the season. Although the mosquitoes were still not in full force, all of us still got bitten. Our journey brought us to within 2 stone throws away from Russia (I tried, stone did not make it across the border river), and also the Mo'erdaoga, where the guide treated us to his personal stash of alcohol (Mo Mao). We also tried horse-riding and visited an elk farm.
The guide was very friendly and knowledgeable about the entire tour area. We were eating at similar price to locals thanks to him, and our accommodation every night is very affordable. A special mention to the lamb in Hulunbuir, where there is absolutely no foul smell that some people disliked. It was a fantastic experience and one can adjust the comfort level according to your own budget.

Many Chinese died building this fort for the Japanese. The tunnels are impressive. There are lots of artifacts and the museum is well laid out. Outside there a bunch of tanks arranged on the hillside that is really interesting to look at. Military people and history buffs should really like this.

Cannot say that its bad, but you wonder why is it even an attraction, and what are the entrance fee collected for. Besides tree, which are all over the places surrounding this place, it has absolutely nothing to offer. Feels like putting up a fence around a few trees, call it an attraction so that you can collect a fee from whoever wants to visit. It is neither fun nor is it picturesque. Don't bother with this one.

In the evenings, there is a street food market selling all sorts of foods and other trinkets.
During the day the market is not present. So be sure to visit in the evening! Aside from the street market there are lots of restaurants. We've tried one street BBQ, which was very tasty offering all sorts of food and cold beer (!).
The restaurants are of varying quality, and its hard to establish that by their looks, as this has little correlation with the quality of their food.
When you enter the ancient city there is a pretty Chinese arch. There are also various pretty statues.
At the end of the street is a large square. At night it fills with people, dancing, playing games and relaxing. There is also a temple, though we've never seen it open so can't comment.
However, be aware of the smell, at some points it can be quite unpleasant.

We visited this museum to learn more about the culture of Hulunbuir and were not disappointed. We took a taxi from the town center. The museum has exhibits on the ethnic groups in Hulunbuir and their history, religion and culture. The Ewanki are people that originally came from the Siberia region and settled in Hulunbuir. A current census estimates the Ewanki population to be approx. 30,000. The Ewankis are best known as reindeer herders, so quite a few exhibits were made from reindeer e.g. reindeer shoes. I do not remember the admission fee, but it was really cheap for such an extensive museum.
The exhibits include ancient items of pottery, copper and gold. There are also daily items that were used many years ago, including clothing, hunting and fishing items.
There are displays of how ancient Ewankis used to live and the animals of the region. A war exhibit has many different types of weapons that were used in the war against the Japanese. At the end of the museum visit, there are gift and craft shops. We watched a leather artist sewing handmade items for a while. You will exit the museum and see a display of replica tents that were used in ancient times. If you have bags to collect, you will have to walk back towards the entrance of the museum.
We thought that the displays were well presented, although there were no english explanations. We were visiting Mongolia the following week and thought that the displays were also relevant to mongol culture e.g. gers, sheep herding, shaman clothing.

At the intersection of Shengli and Manzhouli in Hailar, the locals come out to play. Boats, dune bugys and electric cars for the kids. After dark, the lights around the park are definitely worth seeing. Street vendors sell everything from street meat on a stick to trinkets for your friends back home. If you find yourself spending a night or two in Hailar, its definitely worth the walk around.
