What to do and see in Howth, Ireland: The Best Places and Tips

October 10, 2017 Milan Banda

Howth (/ˈhoʊθ/; Irish: Binn Éadair, meaning "Éadar's peak") is a village and outer suburb of Dublin, Ireland. The district occupies the greater part of the peninsula of Howth Head, forming the northern boundary of Dublin Bay. Originally just a small fishing village, Howth with its surrounding once-rural district is now a busy suburb of Dublin, with a mix of dense residential development, quarries and wild hillside. The only neighbouring district on land is Sutton. Howth is also home to one of the oldest occupied buildings in Ireland, Howth Castle. It has been the site of filming for many films.

Howth Head

The Howth walk is a nice cliff edge walk. There are a number of routes and all are pretty. A good pair of shoes are recommended. The path can get slippy and wet. The walk is easy enough if you are anyway fit. The views are lovely. Give yourself a good three hours if you are doing a ring. While Howth pier is ok, and very commercial, it does offer plenty of places to eat and get a drink. The drive out to Howth can be a pain but if you have not been, its worth having a look.

An area of outstanding beauty. Was a very very windy day and freezing so wrap up well. Views are beautiful - just keep walking till you have had enough - a fantastic area very close to Dublin with great fish shops and restaurants nearby at the end of a day

The views are great, with or without good weather! However, please be warned that Howth is seeing an increase in theft. Our vehicle window was busted out when we returned to the parking lot, the back seats were opened, and our belongings in the trunk were all stolen. The trail is also very littered, used condoms on the benches, but again - the views are so great!

The island itself is gorgeous, glimpses of the seals resting on one side of the island was unique along with the variety of seabirds swimming, flying, or just sitting on the rocks as the boat passed by. Would NOT recommend the ISLAND Ferries ferry due to their total lack of customer service skills i.e. no communications skills to speak of (no pun intended) and certainly nothing about the island its history, bird types, etc.; allowing to many passengers on-board on the way back, and more importantly not offering life jackets to the four children (or insisting they wear life jackets particularly as it was so choppy) which I thought was mandatory - wish we had gone with another ferrier!

The lighthouse is one of the destinations along the Howth Harbor. The walk is probably 15 minutes each way from the land side of the harbor. The walk offers some nice views of the harbor and Islands off the coast.
