Actually, we started our journey from Hakata to Kumamoto via Shinkansen, then "Steam Locomotive Hitoyoshi" (SL人吉, a traditional steam train) to Hitoyoshi, right after "Isaburo Shimpei" to Yoshimatsu, also "Hayato No Kaze Express" to Kagoshima Chuo Station.
Apart from the beautiful scenery from the trains, definitely you should try the snack or bento from individual trains or Hitoyoshi Station, also don't forget to stamp a memory card which is available on all trains.
Highly recommend everyone to buy the 3 or 5-day JR Pass (for whole Kyushu area), well plan your itinerary and reserve your seat at JR service counter at those main stations (e.g. Hakata, Kumamoto) more in advance.

Aso Shrine was founded in 806 AD. The present shrine was constructed in early Edo period 1609-1613, regarded as protector of the land in Kuma district. This shrine had a distinctive architecture in Momoyama style, coated in black with steep thatched roof and decorated with detailed engravings and intricate patterns.
Aoi Aso Shrine and its 5 pavilions were appointed as National Treasures of Japan in 2008.
It was a short walk of around 8 minutes from Hitoyoshi station and signified by the pleasant red bridge over the lotus pond on the front gate.

Sengetsu Shuzo - Is Japan's Shochu Award Winning Shochu (Kawabe) factory, where you can get a free shochu factory tour and shochu tasting at the 111 year-old factory. I was with a group of five people and were given a factory tour and a tasting of about 8 different rice shochu, called Kuma Shochu, including 2 award winning shochu, including "Kawabe", and "Mai Sengetsu". The tour takes about 10 minutes, after which you can have your tasting. If you are interested in buying some shochu, there is a great deal for sale in the tasting room, along with some food products made in the local area. The factory is located about 5 minutes by taxi, or 15 minutes by walking. I would highly recommend this free tour.

This funny railway museum highlighted the establishment of Hisatsu line, displaying its history through video and models. There was food outlet, shop for souvenirs and stationaries, a small splash pool, and an Observatory deck at 2-3/F level. Kids must have lots of fun riding on the mini-train from indoor of Mozoca station to outdoor Hitoyoshi station.
This circular building was just 2 minutes walk from Hitoyoshi station.

The Castle was located by the river bank of Kuma river. It was the home of Sagara clan for about 700 years. Needed to walk uphill to reach the castle ruins, in fact, only the remains of walls were left. Not much to see.

The Museum by the Kuma river bank has exhibits of evolution of landuse, history of shogun, landlords and ceramic chinas found underground. The special part of museum showed a possible underground well as part of the dwelling of landlord. 2 minutes walk away from the museum, there was another display of a well which allowed for photos.

Eikokuji was on one of the main road, cemetery was on both side to the path leading to the temple. Atmosphere was not good. Better not to go in as there were much more attractive shrines to visit in Kyushu.

球磨川鉄道の観光案内つきの限定列車が田園シンフォニーのようですが、一般ダイヤの車両も同じ車両を使っています。明るいリビング風の内装がなんともかわいいです。沿線にもう少し華が欲しいのだけど。

Right next to the train station, here is the place to get most important information about Hitoyoshi, map and places to visit. They also made reservation of river cruise, and a short cut to get Aoiado Shrine. Thanks!
