Being on a photo tour with Vietnam In Focus I'm always seeking spectacular scenery to capture. Dong Van Karst Plateau surpassed all expectations. Mountainous pinnacles rose from the valley like something out of Avatar. It was just superb. Do yourself a favour and travel to this beautiful place.

Spent 2.5 days on the motorbike doing the extreme northern loop and it was incredible.
From Ha Giang we had a coffee about 80 mins into the journey, you cannot miss the place the views are spectacular, then continued for about another 80 mins to Yin Minh for lunch. There are a few rice eateries on the main drag and the food was delish. The drive form Yin Minh to Dong Van is fantastic and the last 45 mins or so superb. Stayed the night in Dong Van as there are enough places to grab dinner and breakfast with a decent coffee. We had dinner opposite the night market square, as the main drag only seemed to offer hot pot, which is fine if there are several of you but expensive for a couple. We went back to the same place for breakfast and coffee, it's hard to miss but I don't recall the name.
Dong Van to Meo Vac is said to be the most spectacular in SE Asia, not just Vietnam, and it is. It was a bit foggy when we did it (3 days ago) but to drive it on a clear day would be even better to be honest.

The journey from Dong Van to Lung Cu goes through stunning scenery & would be worth doing even without the flagpole. However, the flagpole is impressive & the views from the top, which include the Chinese border are well worth the cost & the climb.

Soak in the beautiful pass and stretch your legs at the viewpoint. Great place for photos too. Easily spent over an hour just enjoying the beauty of mother nature. Our Earth is pretty incredible! So lets look after it eh? Disappointing to see the rubbish carelessly thrown around. It's pretty easy to put things in a bin!
