Great place to visit. Parking is just outside the village (€4) and there is a well sign-posted route to the Cheese Market or KaasMarkt. The village is very quaint with some beautiful buildings. The cheese market is a reenactment from 10:30-12:30 each Wednesday morning during the summer months. Check website for updates. The cheese is quite expensive but you can to taste some samples. There are also dressed up cheese merchants and even boats transporting the cheese up and down the river. A lovely atmosphere which can be coupled with an afternoon strolling around Volendam for a super day out.

Walking thought Edam is wonderful. A small, clean and quiet historical town. However, if you continue walking along the canal for about 20 - 25 minutes you will come to Fort Edam, which is one of 42 first that forms a defensive ring around Amsterdam. It stretches over 125 Kms long. It was built around 1900's and used Amsterdams best weapon to protect the country - water. Unfortunately, technology neutralized the plan and it was not effective. The Fort is a small part of the UNESCO heritage site. It is only open the first and second Sunday's from April to October. It is on an island and looks like a concrete block house. Worth a visit, English brochures avaliable.

This is a really interesting little museum packed with artefacts. We had a lovely, warm welcome from the staff.
The audio guide was free (makes such a refreshing change) and the admission price was really cheap. Accessibility is a bit tricky if you have small children or a bad back. The small, winding stairs are a tight squeeze with no bannisters - just a rope.
Unsurprisingly, the floating cellar was the highlight. The kids loved it. Top marks too to the museum for putting descriptions in English for most things.
Edam is a beautiful place to visit.

The stained-glass windows are both beautiful and historically important. When the church was damaged, towns from around The Netherlands sent money to replace a window. Each window displays the characteristics of a town that sent funds-- Amsterdam, The Hague, Delft, etc.

Edam, a beautiful little town on the former Zuiderzee border, known for its signature bowl sized cheeses and its beautiful old (protestant) Great Church. It's catholic twin sister Volendam is known for different reasons, a must see bus tour from Amsterdam but extremely touristy. Edam...MoreWe are of course very grateful for this positive review of the forthcoming series. One thing though: the series features Romantic music. To younger generations this might seem 'ancient' but our 1885 Erard Concert Grand is already a product of the industrial revolution.

Specialty Cheese Shop Edam is situated in a 16th century building in the historical centre of Edam. Many tourists visit the attractive shop where they can find the genuine Edam cheeses or the cow, goat and sheep cheeses made at Henri Willig’s cheese farm. There are also organic cheeses and cheeses from other European countries for sale, as well as exclusive wines and fine foods.
What a great cheese shop! The staff members were helpful, and they made wonderful Dutech sandwiches, as they called them, with tasty bread, ham, cheese, eggs and condiments. Really a treat. The store had lots of other food items and some souvenirs for sale. Very clean place. Nice experience plus a great lunch.

While walking from the bus stop through Edam One can't miss this tall, slender bell tower. It is all that remains of the 13th century church. The tower itself us from the 15th century. The original name was Church of our Dear Lady. Unfortunately, the nave was taken down in the late 1800's. The bell tower is quite unique in that the bells are on the outside, they play on the quarter hour. The tower itself is a nice backdrop to the old town. We couldn't get inside and we were unable to see inside.

In earlier days Edam cheeses were weighed at the Kaaswaag, in the historical heart of Edam. A visit to the Kaaswaag weighing house and the summer cheese market will take you back to the origin of the world-renowned round cheeses. The Kaaswaag has a permanent exhibition about the art of making cheese. It goes without saying that you can also sample and purchase cheese here. Sorry we are closed from October-March.
The term "De Kaaswaag" loosely translates at the "the cheese scale" and refers to the weigh station at the main square in Edam, the Jan van Niewenhuisen Square - Jan Nieuwenhuyzenplein - just off the River Ije or E (hence the name "Edam" from the damming of the river). It is a small museum dedicated to the art of Dutch cheese-making. It houses severe pieces equipment formerly used in cheese production, especially the famed Edam cheese. It should be noted that local, small-scale cheese production no longer takes place in Edam, the manufacture of Edam cheese having become industrialized, to the tune of 27 million balls of cheese annually. Naturally the transport of Edam cheese spheres no longer requires uniformed cheeses carriers lifting the sled-like "berries" bearing piles of carefully arranged cheeses. This spectacle of weighing and carrying loads of cheese is re-enacted during the summer months for the benefit of tourists.
No visit here would be complete without sampling the iconic cheese, possibly buying a sphere for later, local consumption.
