The old Miner's Cottage in Charters Towers is not your usual museum! Owned and operated by a retired prospector, Alan Silverwood, the little timber workers cottage houses Alan's extensive collection of Australiana, Antiques, Collectables, Curios and a whole lot more.... Visitors can browse the collection or try their hand at gold panning in the "tailings". Full tuition is available and this activity is very popular. Every year, hundreds of school-age children visit the cottage to learn about the golden history of the town. Located near the centre of Charters Towers, the cottage is within walking of the Post Office. The Miner's Cottage is open for bookings and personalised guided tours 7 days a week. Just call the owner to make a booking. School groups and bus tour groups are specially catered for, over 1000 schoolchildren visit the cottage to learn about the fascinating history of Charters Towers. The gold panning is very popular! Real GOLD can be found in the tailings...
Want to learn how to pan for gold?
Would you like to be challenged by interesting gizmos?
Would you enjoy a venue crammed with mining memorabilia?
Then the Miners' cottage and its collection ticks all the boxes.
In a street just off the centre of town, there is scarcely any room to move. That is part of the charm. Alan runs a great show and proves that any item is worthy of collecting.
PS I didn't have quite enough cash to pay for our entry. Alan just waved us through. What a man!

Built to a design by Mark Cooper Day as the Royal Arcade, the Charters Towers Stock Exchange operated here from 1890 until 1916. The building houses many local Charters Towers businesses and the National Trust of Queensland Don Roderick Art Gallery. A rare example of an arcade in Queensland, one with architecture adapted to climate and well-liked for its scale and barrel-vault entrance, the Stock Exchange Arcade is indicative of the rise and fall of fortune on the nineteenth century goldfield.
During a recent caravanning holiday we stopped in Charters Towers for a few days and enjoyed delicious scones at the Stock Exchange Archade in Charters Towers. This lovely building is similar to the old stock exchange building in Bendigo Victoria which was also a gold mining city. We loved our visit to the town and particularly loved the old buildings that are so well maintained. Thanks for a step back into history, we will return.

Built in the late 1800's and early 1900's the ‘Zara Clark Museum’ includes a large collection of transport related and local artefacts, as well as mining and medical items and photographs. Two, single storey brick and stucco buildings similar in design and scale make up the Museum.
One of the best volunteer run museums I've been to. Roomy, filled with intriguing memorabilia, carefully organised, knowledgeable staff who were very welcoming of children. All of us, from 91 years to 8 years old, were impressed!

Leahton Park is a beautifully presented 1100 acre property situated 10km by sealed road from Charters Towers. It is home to the following: Leahton Park Country Cabins - comfortable bed and breakfast accommodation. Texas Longhorn Wagon Tours & Safaris - horse drawn wagon rides viewing the largest herd of purebred Texas Longhorn cattle in Australia and also JR, the Guinness World Record horned steer. Bethel Saddlery - hand crafted saddles and tack.
I have just returned from a tour to Charters Towers that I arranged for a group of Cairns locals and Leahton Park was a highlight on the itinerary.
A short drive to the property from town in our small bus, the group enjoyed the meet & greet with owners Mick and Lynda followed by traditional Billy Tea/Damper and syrup.
It was then 'All aboard' for the horse drawn wagon ride to see up close, the Texas Longhorns and in particular, JR with Guiness Book of Records fame.
Lynda took the group to the saddlery and showed us samples of Mick's intricate craftsmanship in saddle making and other leather work and the tools used to achieve these impressive results.
The property is lovely and really well maintained, a true labour of love and passion for what they do and have achieved is apparent ...perfectly served with a 'smidge' of dry humour from Mick.
A "Must Do" inclusion for your Charters Towers visit and it is ideal for all ages.

Whoever maintains this picnic and viewpoint area, takes a lot of pride in their work. Peaceful place to sit and read, bring your lunch, or just take in the great views over the city and surrounding district.

View the exterior of Lyall's Store front, significant as an intact store space, working area and strong room in a former gold mining town. Its narrow frontage, indicative of the challenges of early surveying in a town already established, and its curved plate glass display windows make a valuable contribution to Mosman Street. This masonry store was constructed in 1897 for watchmaker and jeweller David Lyall. A well-known and prestigious store, Lyall's was fitted out fashionably and expensively and from its opening lit with electric light.
Had a good look around Charters Towers. Great little city and people are friendly. Had some good shopping experiences and the town boasts some great history. Will hopefully be back.
