As we planned our 2 week European adventure we came across the pumpkin festival in Ludwigsburg and immediately decided it was a must - after all, it is the WORLD's largest!
The festival is held on the grounds of Bluhendes Barock - a GORGEOUS setting for so many gourds! Even without the festival, the palace and grounds are fantastic to walk around. With the festival - you will find EVERYTHING pumpkin! There was pumpkin art, pumpkin food and pumpkin WINE!
We spent several hours enjoying the day and our 19 month old LOVED it!
This was a unique event and somewhat off the beaten path compare to the typical "must-do's" in Europe. We did not get to really explore Ludwigsburg as we were there for less than 24 hours, but the festival was the perfect way to put us in the spirit of fall!

Germany's first theme park, is in the countryside just outside Stuttgart. Erlebnispark Tripsdrill opened back in 1929. Today, there are 100 attractions for all ages, includingthe new catapult roller coaster "Karacho" which accelerates its vehicles to 100 km/h in a mere 1.6 second. Over time, the park was extended to link up more and more with nature, for this is the major appeal of Tripsdrill. Thus today, more than 100 original attractions are laid out over 77 hectares - including the roller coaster "Mammut", one of the few in Germany of wooden construction, with a height of 30 metres, and the new catapult roller coaster "Karacho" which accelerates its vehicles to 100 km/h in a mere 1.6 seconds. Yet little ones also obtain good value for money in Tripsdrill, as many of the attractions are specially conceived with the younger visitor in mind, for example the new indoor playground "Gaudi-Viertel" in the Village Street. The theme park's slogan is "Schwaben [Swabia] anno 1880". All the attractions are centred on this theme and evoke Swabia's tradition and history. In this respect, Tripsdrill's approach is generally tongue-in-cheek rather than serious - but not without valuable snippets of information for anyone interested: about wine-making - "from the vine to the glass", the Swabian housewife - "1850 wash-house", handicraft and many other curiosities. And, since Tripsdrill's origins lie in gastronomy, a great deal of attention is paid to the quality of the meals. The "Gasthaus zur Altweibermühle" waiter-service restaurant on site is reputed for its excellent regional cuisine and game specialties - entirely home-made to grand-mother's original recipe. In the neighbouring wildlife park (Wildparadies), Arctic wolves, bears and numerous wild animals native to Europe await visitors. It is possible to see them up close on a feeding tour with the game warden. Bald eagles, vultures and owls also feature among the residents of the wildlife park. The falconry proposes a walking tour or a flight demonstration in the afternoon. In open-air enclosures, visitors can approach several species of deer and even feed them. For those seeking to experience nature with all their senses, there are the forest adventure path (Walderlebnis-Pfad), barefoot path (Barfuß-Pfad) and adventure playground (Abenteuerspielplatz) to have a good romp. With its original accommodation facilities, Tripsdrill enables to extend this adventure amidst pure nature. In the nature resort, located in front of the wildlife park, there are comfortable shepherds' wagons, and tree houses hidden in the forest. The shepherds' wagons can accommodate up to five people. Each one offers a small sitting area with flat-screen TV, a refrigerator, washing facilities and heating. Showers and WCs are available in a modern central sanitation block. The tree-houses for 2-4 and 5-6 people are comfortably equipped, each with its own sanitation, a sink, a refrigerator and a coffee machine, as well as a living room with TV. From the veranda, it is possible to hear the wolves howling in the evening - an exhilarating experience!
We had our IT Department weekend getaway here in Tripsdrill - which means we completed a treasure hunt on the amusement park grounds and then proceeded to try out all the rides.
It was my first time in Tripsdrill and found it really charming. It was Halloween-time, so it was nicely decorated and in the evening they even had special shows and people dressed up as scary characters going around and scaring people.
From the size perspective it is definitely not on the same scale as a Disneyland, but a cute and charming theme park for small(er) kids. The roller coasters - both the old-fashioned wooden one and the modern one - are great fun for adults, too.
You can get all sorts of food from food stalls located pretty much everywhere. Nice landscaping, definitely a nice day out for the entire family.

Although we lived in Stuttgart for 8 years, we never visited this fortress by Ludwigsburg, but visited it recently after the prison museum was opened. The hill on which the fortress was built was the center of a large Celtic region in the years B.C. The fortress has a long history, and in its latter years was converted into a prison for political prisoners and others. It is said that it is the highest mountain in Swabia, it took only 10-20 minutes to climb it, but a lifetime to come down! The drive up between the high walls would be better done on foot to give a better feeling for the place. After entering the fortress and climbing up above, you are greeted with wonderful views. The buildings in the center of the fortress are surrounded and topped by razor wire as it is currently a prison hospital with I believe under 200 inmates. You can enter one building, part of which has been converted into a museum. There are displays about 20 or 30 of the more famous inmates containing some of their actual items and also a short history for them, a sobering experience. The displays are all in German, but if you ask the curator he will give you an explanatory sheet in English.
There is a restaurant open in the evenings.
Well worth visiting.

.......in Besigheim.

I have been to a few of these places and this is one of the better ones I have been to. Kind of tough to find without your GPS though. I held my son's birthday party here and it easily accommodates over 50 parties at a time. There is a huge climbing structure, bouncy thing, trampolines, bikes, ball pits, slides, you name it, they have it!
One good thing about this place is they do not charge adults much money to go, I think it's about 3.50 euro an adult and not much more per child. Oh and this was the cheapest place I found for big groups like for birthday parties which included food. It was also great for wintertime when it was too cold to go outside.
