So many towns and cities these days have developed pedestrian only streets which contribute to increased social interaction, and Bayamo is no exception. This area is vibrant, and allows people to meander in the shopping areas with no sense of the need to hurry or watch out for traffic. Well worth spending some time wandering.

The wax museum was an interesting stop. It was nice on a hot sunny day in the cool environment of the wax museum. There were statues of Jose Marti, Ernest Hemmingway, Benny More, Cespedes and other musicians, and Cuban notables
We particularly liked the photo exhibits that they used in the creating of the sculptures. I thought it was well worth it. They do have the standard 1 CUC admission per person and the 5 for the Camera.

Having been offered a cd by every band in every bar and restaurant this was the only place that we actually bought one as they were very good. Usual 'special' cocktail available along with trinkets. Not somewhere you would stay for hours but worth a visit to listen to some talented musicians who inject some humour into their show.

The Jardín Botánico de Cupaynicú is just outside the village of Guisa on a road to the Sierra Masestra. Take a taxi from Bayamo. It was started in 1981, but seems very natural, containing trees of over 300 years old. The garden has a collection of edible and medicinal plants and 72 palms of all shapes and sizes, of which 16 are native Cuban. There is a large area of native forest and scientists are studying the flora to see what benefit they can be to man. You findout too how plants were used in the revolution, one in particular used to carry messages - they wrote on the leaves and the message was only visible several hours later. Our guide spoke great English, entrance was free, we were asked for our passports.

Well worth a visit with Cespedes' statue in the middle and the statue (with words and tune) of the composer of the national anthem. Main post office, several restaurants and cafes. Cultural centre with local art on display (free) and the Cathedral just behind.

We arranged this with Anley via email. We were collected at 5am from Santiago. We can a call at our casa the night before And the guide, Misule introduced himself and asked if his wife and child could join us. We said it was ok. We stopped at a couple of places such and still had to pay two or three CUCs each for the Spanish guide. Luckily Misule spoke English. We then finally got to the national park again we had to pay 5 CUC she for the guide. All theses were hidden costs that we ere not told about. As we had spent so much time at the other two stops we did not have time to do the walk to the terraces. This is why we came all this way! When we got to pillion it was late and as it's a small town nowhere open to eat, went to bed hungry (luckily we had some nuts with us). The cost I had agreed was 250 CUC for two people, but Misule's bill said 280 and we could not get hold of Anley. the driver then drove us back to Santiago which was the most beautiful journey. I tied to contact him when we got to Santiago about extra 30 CUC but no response. On the whole it was ok. The region is amazing. I would recommend being much clearer with him and getting all the hidden costs in writing.
