We went here as part of a shore excursion from Coquimbo Chile. This restaurant uses solar heat to cook their food. They showed us their ovens before we sat down for lunch and told us how they worked.
I had the goat which was good and it tastes like it was cooked in a crockpot since this cooking method is slow cooking as well. The buns were also cooked in a solar oven as well and they were more dense than usual and they don't brown in this type of oven. The salad was very good as it was locally grown in the Elqui valley. My friend enjoyed the Chile wine that came with the meal.
I would recommend eating in this restaurant if you visit the Elqui valley as the cooking method is very novel and the service and the food was good.

This restaurant serves pretty good food. Would normally have rated three stars, but I thought the creative method of preparation warranted an additional star. Pretty cool to think all the food was cooked by the sun. The set lunch menu included bread, a big salad, chicken, rice, and a dessert than was like flan but with a harder, rougher texture (made with semolina, I think). Portions were generous. Service was efficient and friendly. We enjoyed the peaceful, vineyard setting. Note that the restaurant is not in Vicuña but rather in Villaseca, a neighboring village. Use GPS or it may be difficult to find.

We enjoyed our experience at Emporio Oveja Negra so much that we returned twice more during our stay in the Elqui Valley. The hot chocolate, sandwiches, coffee, and desserts were delicious, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere was very comfortable. My friend even purchased a handmade copper necklace that was displayed among the other local art and jewelry. I would recommend this place wholeheartedly, and would definitely return the next time I'm in Vicuna!

We enjoyed lunch at this restaurant in Vicuña set in a leafy, open air courtyard. (There was also an inside section, but we sat outside because it was hot.) The restaurant is presided over by a slightly eccentric but charming chef. We stopped by on New Year’s Eve when the chef was short staffed and had to play the role of waiter as well. Signs on the walls warned that if you were in a hurry or stressed out, this was not the restaurant for you. We had nowhere to be so did not mind a leisurely lunch in the shade.
We enjoyed the jugos naturales. I personally was not wild about the main courses, but my family loved the food at Paraiso del Elqui. My younger son, the super picky one, was over the moon for the grilled chicken and rice the chef cooked for him. I shared a fish dish and a stewed meat dish (beef, I think) with my other son. I thought the fish was only so-so and the beef was too salty, but my son liked both dishes. That said, we both thought the poppy seed rice served with the fish was strange and unappetizing. Overall, I think too much tarragon was used. My husband ordered a grilled steak, which was tasty. We all (except my younger son) tried the steak and gave it three thumbs up.
We liked the atmosphere of this restaurant, which seemed to be from another time and place. We felt like we were visiting a relative who asked us what we wanted to eat and then cooked it for us. The menu is more a list of suggestions than an actual menu. The table and menus were sticky, but this is a common phenomenon in Chile. If you have the time, make your way to Paraiso del Elqui for a unique and leisurely dining experience.

We all had the grilled chicken breast which was moist and tasty.
Very quiet and we decided to try it after being handed a leaflet in the square and the restaurant recommended in Rough Guide had closed down. It was just what was required. Waiters attentive.
