Sarria is a municipality in the province of Lugo, northwestern Spain, in the autonomous community of Galicia. Sarria is the most densely populated town on the French Way in Galicia, with 13,700 inhabitants. It is head of the region and a popular starting point for the Camino de Santiago; many pilgrims choose Sarria because the distance from this point to Santiago allows them to cover the necessary kilometers to reach the Compostela. King Alfonso IX of León died in Sarria in 1230 while making a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. Sarria also represents the point of entry to the beautiful landscapes, such as Os Ancares and O Courel, east of Galicia.

I noted the door was open which was unusual for the many churches in this part of the world. Always been drawn to these places as they are so impressive inside. Anyhow, it seems church is only open for a few hours a day and that mainly for the stamping of pilgrim passports. I didn't partake but had a wander around the church instead. An impressive gold alter piece with vaulted ceilings. But none the less a simple church, which is unusual for this part of the world. Not worth a special trip but certainly worth a look if you are walking by.

Stop in here to pick up a map of town. It's larger than you think or expect and the map will help you find more restaurants. Also able to answer any questions you might have.

We walked pass the murals on our way through the town and found them inspiring in a way - the previous evening we walked passed and across the stream to see "all the ducks in a row" which was an omen for us
