Ettumanoor Mahadeva temple is an ancient Shiva temple in Kottayam, Kerala. Ezhara Ponnana, the annual festival, at the Temple is a popular and historic one.
The story of Ezhara Ponnana is linked to the king’s rule. Ezhara means seven-and-a-half and Ponnana means golden elephant. Made of wood and covered in gold, each of the seven elephants is two feet high and the eighth one is of one foot only. Hence they are together called seven-and-a-half elephants. An awesome kayaking experience through the Kumarakom backwaters. Being a first timer on kayak didn't make much difference. Even my father and father-in-law enjoyed it. A slow motion ride through the tranquil backwaters, serene landscape, traditional houses and shops on the shores made if an unforgettable experience. The bird watching a surprise treat. Our coach was very helpful, a know-it-all nature lover and a cool buddy. Kudos to him for organizing this for us.:-)

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

This place is average and that has nothing to do with the birds. The men at the entrance made me wait while they served a large group who arrived after me. Foreigners pay 3 X domestic tourists. Not sure where any of the money is going, the trail is dilapidated, rubbish bins are not being emptied and the two watch towers are pretty run down, one more so than the other. We enjoy bird watching but the built environment of this place really takes away from the natural beauty of the birds. Overall a poor example of a 'sanctuary'

This is more a souvenir shop. Quite a dust place. They have a lot of old antiquated possibly discarded curio items. But they also have some good handcrafts. We bought some HAY "Painting" actually landscapes created by pasting hay strands on black cloth. There was a fair collection but they were kept in cheap and dusty polythene bags which were open so dust also reached the black cloth. But since some paintings were truly good we bought them. Another good thing we got were wooden keychains with Kerala figures/ illustrations quite beautifull, we bought a nuber of these. Bought some Kathakali faces on polished wood with brass at earings, crown etc. Also there was a beautiful model of Shikara with Brass work too. Good Kerala craftsmanship. Delicate though.
Apart from this I did not explore the 1st floor. Outside there was an original Cannoe, possibly one used in the festival. Ideal for taking pictures with your loved ones in.
All in all 1 - 1.5 hour of expenses, damages around 3000/- for small purchases.

I visited this place in September 2016 with my wife and family. Myself I felt like it was just an average massage. Nothing special and nothing really different from a regular massage. My wife was stating the same and she ended up getting sick (most likely from the oil on the hair)... Other then that it was a beautiful and clean place and customer service was great. The only con I have is that it was really really expensive. It cost me more per person compared to a massage anywhere else.

Shivaganga Holidays

Reviewed By JPV74 - Bengaluru, India

Shivaganga Holidays had arranged the Houseboat stay from Kumarakom. There are many houseboat and one needs to be sure what kind of houseboat one needs at the time of booking. As there are boats with larger width having bigger rooms. The hospitality is good but can be improved a bit more as houseboat stay is also nothing less than a stay in resort. The room was good and the food satisfying. The check-in is at 12am and the lunch is served at 1-1.30pm, then there is snacks during tea time and dinner around 8pm. The houseboat cruise is only till 5.30pm or max till 6pm then its anchored by the lake side where in we can go for a walk in the village where its anchored. The AC and cable facility is available only after the houseboat is anchored. Again it depends on the type of boat as many a new boats have DG set in the houseboat.
The tour is very nice and one can feel the beautiful lake, its all around water and just houseboats all around. In the morning breakfast is served and a short cruise before check-out. Overall it was a nice experience and must try to feel the real beauty of kerala.
