These ruins are relatively unknown and are very well preserved and set in beautiful surrounds. The site is a small pukara similar to the Quilmes ruins and was an important strategic point for protecting the mountain pass from Tafi del Valle before entering the Valle Calchaqui. The site's name comes from the "cardones" or thistles (Trichocereus pasacana) that make up the abundant vegetation that grows there. Some of these are as tall if not taller than those at the Los Cardones National Park in Salta.
This part of the province of Salta is quite desertic. The soil, mostly in hues of pink, suggests high iron and aluminum content. Strange gologic formations stud the scenery and different types of cacti, many reminiscent of sahuaro cactus, populate the plains. It is surprising the variety if flora one can find here, but very little wildlife.

We stopped in Cachi on our way from Colome to Salta. This small town in the Calchaqui valley is a conglomerate of adobe houses and typical, Spanish colonial buildings. It has a very nich church and an archeological museum worth seeing. It also has a number of restaurants and cafes, with surprisingly good food and selection of beverages.

We left Salta by car and drove along the steep climb called Cuesta del Obispo. After a brief stop at 3.500m to contemplate the magnificent scenery, we drove further towards Cachí. After a 10 minute drive, we encountered the world famous Recta del Tintin, a perfect straight line drawn with Inca technology in the XV century. This is an amazing 19km straight road cutting across a spell-binding valley with marvellous cactus (cardones) vegetation. What a sight for sore eyes! We highly recommend the ride!

This museum should not be missed. There is an especially good collection of pottery and stone pieces covering a wide period of time. The items are well displayed and the explanations informative. Personally I would like this informative material to be presented in a larger print format. I was squinting all the time. But the explanations were worth the "tired" eyes.

Cachi is a small, Spanish colonial town in northwestern salta province. It has a lot of life, and while th epopulation is small, lots of visitors pass through, on their way to Salta or Cafayate. The church is a charming reminder of colonial times: a single nave, the bellfry incorporated into the =facade, and elaborately decorated main altar and side altars.

There are not too many extras while crossing the PN Los Cordons by car besides enjoying the landscape but this short detour (about 10km roundtrip) will allow for the discovery of a small lateral valley at the top of the Cuesta de Obispo. Access is easy, even with a normal car if the track is dry and will be closed with a chain if not. It is well worth the few extra km and you will be able to walk in this splendid and surprisingly green little valley and even to have a picnic at the end of the road. Beautiful.

The main route to Cafayate, Route 68 (very good road, easy driving 186km), has perhaps the most dramatic scenery in the entire NW of Argentina It's like seeing all of the dramatic scenery of the western USA crammed into one relatively short drive. Cafayate is beautiful & does show you a true small town, but the culture is "VINOcultura" -- vineyards & wine, wine everywhere. . located at the central zone of the Valles Calchaquies 1,683 metres (5,522 ft) an important tourist centre for exploring the Calchaquíes Valleys, and because of the quality and originality of the wines produced in the area. The largest golf course in South America, at 240 acres is currently being developed just outside of the city center at La Estancia de Cafayate The town was founded in 1840, at the site of a Mission One should stay overnight in this quaint village and continue to cachi the following day .... an isolated colonial town frozen in time. Discover the Incan & Colonial roots of Argentina combined with breathtaking views of Los Cardones National Park surroundings. The road back to Salta from Cachi is incredible although the mountain part can be a little scary we did this tour with TEA tours in Salta exellent driver/guide
