We were lucky enough to be introduced to Johnson from a friend we made in Hikkaduwa! Johnson took amazing care of us for our time in Arugam bay - taking us out to local surf spots in the morning by tuk tuk with the occasional stop ins to local bakeries etc on the way! Johnson was an amazing surf instructor (standing on my second wave into the lessons was an awesome feeling!) & at all times I felt safe and had so much FUN!!! Johnson took us out every day while in the bay & we were really sad to leave! He consistently gave me feedback on how to improve my technique & I feel I got better each day which was great! My partner also had an epic time (on the bigger waves) and Johnson was able to give us advice on the different breaks & spots! We will definitely be back to Arugam bay one day - I could not recommend a better instructor!! Johnson runs amazing accomodation in Cabanas & although we didn't stay here (as already had booked accommodation) you can rest assured you would be well looked after! Thanks for making our week in Arugam bay so special - Hannah & Jamie!

What an amazing trip, we saw so many birds (eagle, kingfisher), elephant, water buffalo, monkey. No crocodile cause it was a cloudy day.
Price wise: we booked directly at the office. You have to negotiate about the price. They started at 3000 roepies per person, in the end we went for 2000 roepies per person (with 2 people on one boat).
We gave a great tip to the fisherman directly, who paddled us all around, pointed out everything and couldn't stop smiling.

We also support our community by employing and training local fishermen in surf as their knowledge of the ocean, currents and tides is immense. And most importantly we like to keep our environment clean, beautiful and sustainable so we encourage all our visitors to be savvy while they stay. SAFA Surf Camp and Surf School starting activities from 2nd week of March to end of January every year. We provide surf Lessons, surf board rental and surf gears. Arugam Bay is a perfect spot for beginners to learn how to surf or improve their Surfing skills. There's 7 beginners spot that brings gentle waves to learn Surfing easily. Before you surf: The instructors will choose the location depending on the weather and the wave size. Another major factor the instructors will consider is how crowded the spot will be with other surfers
I spent one week in Safa earlier this year, and I was really disappointed with the experience I had there. While the location was amazing, and I am usually comfortable with a relaxed hostel vibe, my time at Safa was ruined by the inappropriateness of the owner, and the lack of health and safety. For example, while we were Surfing, we were left in the water on numerous occasions without any instruction. Back at the camp in the evenings, the owner was frequently drunk and I often felt uncomfortable in his presence because he became very forward and inappropriate with me, and other girls.
I went to Safa to learn yoga and surf and find a place to relax and experience the beauty of Sri Lanka. But I felt like this experience was ruined by Safa Surf camp, where there was a lot of drinking and partying, which I felt unable to avoid because of the persistence of the staff. I felt targeted and taken advantage of because I was a girl traveling alone and would advise against any females travelling there on their own.

This is a very ancient temple which has a chetiya on the beach. That view is unique and only chethiya like that in the island. Please donate this temple as it can be turned into a very peaceful destination. The area has plenty of diversity. Very close to the sea and the chief monk is very friendly.

This yoga class was such a beautiful surprise being on the beachfront yoga shala at Stardust Hotel. The quality of the teaching is incredible and having been to 17 classes over the last few weeks I can happily say that this class is multi level.
The teacher, Yael, is very experienced and supportive of new people coming to class, working within their limits and sets alternatives for those who find things challenging while at the same time gently inspiring you to strengthen, stretch and twist. If you have an injury or haven't practiced in a while she is happy to show you alternatives to safely do the poses and recommends resting if you need.
For people who are more experienced, her classes are a mix of power yoga, pilates and hatha yoga, and the temperature makes the class feel like bikram - which has been great for my tight hips and back. At 1000 LKR per class or 4500 for 5 classes it really is the best value yoga around. As others mentioned, she also sells tasty homemade Kombucha too!
Thank you Yael - You have reinspired me to continue a daily yoga practice and reminded me of how great I feel when I do this!

I have been here once in April 2015 and again in August 2016. In April had a great time Surfing here as a beginner, in August it was a disaster. Waves were enormous, the current was super strong and it was crowded. The only people that could surf in August were intermediates or better and even they had to walk out with their boards and circle back around to get back to line up. It's impossible to paddle out.

In the jungle just a few hundred meters from the main road lies an ancient shrine. It's still in use and it's a nice and quiet place in the jungle. Around it are massive stone hills. The beautiful shrine is also known as jungle Ganesh.
Jungle ganesh is the english translation of this ancient hindu temple situated in Sangamankandy Amparai. There is a lot of history behind this and the temple was said to be a Shiva temple in early times.
Apparently,Sangamankandy is the easter-most point! The name comes from king Sangaman who ruled this.
Visit the on Fridays to witnesd the poojai which is special.
